f%$#, I hit show results about a second before I realized it wouldn't let me vote again after I did that. Mark an extra one for Pirates, eh?
I thought PotC was great, particularly the strong acting talent present in the flick. Depp is a great actor in the right role (and this was the right role), not to mention the other talent - known and unknown - filling the other key roles. Jack, Elizabeth, the governor, the commidore, the two pairs of idiots (Royal Navy and Pirates), so on and so forth. Special effects were damn good as well, especially the human-undead transitions. Same goes for the non-CG special effects. I particularly found the bit where the one pirate goon got the fork stuck in his fake eye quite good, seeing how it moved around. (I wonder if he's actually missing an eye) The swordplay was good as well; very fast-paced, very interesting. At times a little unbelievable, but nothing compared to stuff like Crouching Tiger Hidden Flywire. The script was pretty good, not particularly lacking in any areas aside from "is this possible/probable?" stuff; definitely loaded full with appropriately placed humor, typically thanks to Mr. Depp. I'd say it beats out Reloaded only because the script for Reloaded dragged in places and wasn't as strong. Still, a very good flick. I think I shall pick it up when it comes to DVD. (Yes, this means I will actually own a Disney DVD)
By the way, I will say that Johnny Depp's character is basically a more sober Hunter S. Thompson (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) with a different accent and better clothes. (and a touch of heroism) You could describe the movie as "Disney Ride meets Fear and Loathing". Good stuff.
