Poll: Are you voting for your candidate because you believe in him, or because he's not the other guy?

Both, for what it's worth. I think saying he's 'make the country great' is too much, but he'll fix a lot of problems.

Half option 1, half option 2. I would have had no problem with McCain if he hadn't made such a poor choice with his VP pick.

I can't quite get on board the Obama train, but since there's no viable 3rd party candidate, Obama will probably get my vote because the thought of voting for ANY candidate with (R) attached to the name is enough to make me want to vomit.

(actually, it COULD happen...with the right candidate running, but McCain ain't that candidate...hell, I'm so disgusted with American politics, I could almost vote for Ron Paul...I DO like a lot of what he says...)

Why is that hard to believe? Oh that's right, because you lack the ability to realize that other people might think differently then you.

Anyways, I'm voting out of disdain for the other candidate.

I picked because he is not the other guy. Somewhat ironic when I think McCain was the best of the bad lot of candidates the GOP put up for Pres in 2008. I actually like McCain as a person, but sad to say,
I think McCain lacks the intellect to understand the complexities of the issues and the mental discipline to consider the alternatives. Had the R's nominated someone like Hagel, my voting decision would have been far more difficult.

I think Obama lacks the experience to be fully formed yet, worse yet, Obama has no proven leadership experience, which was why he was my #3 choice on the democratic side. But in terms of intellect, mental discipline, and organization, Obama is clearly Presidential timber. The downside Risk as President is that Obama will lead us down a few wrong paths and will have to back track as a result, but still, I think Obama would make far fewer mistakes than McCain.

Even in ordinary times, I think Obama is the right choice, but these are not ordinary times, and to some extent, its why me must pick Obama.

[ x ] the lesser evil

I see some merit in picking McCain so we have divided government, but:
- I don't want Palin as president
- I don't want McCain dragging the Supreme Court even further to the right
- McCain has changed from critic of torture and warrantless wiretapping to being a Bush apologist
- McCain now seems like a shadow of the man he was in 2000.

So, (holding nose) go go Obamessiah!

Why didn't you just leave the poll options the same as your title options?
IE, because I believe in my candidate, or because he's not the other guy.

I don't think any candidates on the ballot can make this country great. Time is the biggest factor working against them there. As it stands right now, there's about a 75% chance I'm voting Obama, 25% chance I will pick a 3rd party candidate.

I voted third party (for president at least), as a statement and because the person most closely reflects what I believe the country needs right now. I try not to vote democrat or republican unless there is a need, or the person happens to be the best choice in my opinion.

Both for once. I liked Obama's statesman-like qualities (if not all of his politics) from way back in the primaries when I was still in an anti-Bush mood, while then McCain has run a truly horrible campaign that I would have ended up voting against almost no matter what.

edit: it also helped that I didn't like any of the 3rd party candidates this time around.

Two options here

Obama rebuild from the bottom up

McCain stop collecting tax and hand it to the top in hopes that they will spend it on business instead of hookers and blow. Oh, god help us if Barbie gets to be president.

Voting Obama b/c of Palin, and Obama can't be any worse than Bush. McCain has a chance to be, however.

I am voting for the party since none of the candidates are worthy IMHO. One has no experience and the other ... well, I just don't like what he has become. God, this is so sad.

Well, IMO what McCain has become merely represents the current state of the Republican party. I think it will be genuinely beneficial for them to take a couple years off to regroup and rethink, and hopefully go back to some genuine conservatism a la Reagan or Buckley.
And if they decide to continue down this path towards this particular brand of right-wing extremism (socially authoritarian, fiscally populist) as Palin and Rush and some others would have it, then I expect that a new, more moderate socially and yet more genuinely conservative (especially fiscally conservative) party will appear to replace them.
We shall see.

Voting for Obama, not because I'm a huge fan, but because he is the better of 2 choices. I do have some hope that the excellence he has shown in putting together such an effective staff to run a campaign will carry over into government.

Used to have a lot of respect for McCain, but lost that when he traded his integrity for party backing. I agree that him packing the SC would be unacceptable.

Could not ever accept Palin in high office. The idea of putting her in a position where she might become president sends shudders down my spine.
