This is not the case with an expansion since it contains the whole story arc.

So no they are not the same.

Also, name one expansion ever, that cost 19.95 msrp that only contained 5 hours of gameplay? Not because you became bored of the game, but because that was all there was to it?

Until an expansion that comes out in episodes stops in mid production, thats not a valid argument. As of now, its the same thing, just broken down in segments.

There are LOTS of expansions that have had only 5 hours of gameplay. I got more than 5 hours in the first run, and even more going back looking for secrets and skeet shooting. And lots of them cost $30 or more. There are lots of games that cost $40 that have 8 hours or so of gameplay. Tomb Raider Legend is a new example of that.

No, then it wouldn't be an expansion, it would be an episode. And yes it is a valid argument, because an expansion's story is basically finished when it's released. The story is there, it can't be stopped. Even if an episodic game doesn't stop, that fact that it CAN be stopped makes it different.

That's very big, an expansion story is complete it's all there and can't be changed. An episodic game's story is more dynamic, it can be changed because of player feedback or other events. That's it main benefit over an expansion I guess.

If however, the eposides were already all done and just waiting to be released, then the developer is ripping off it's customers by releasing the parts as episodes at near expansion prices. 2 episodes would equal the price of an A list expansion. 3 episodes and u have the price of a full game.

You have your opinion, I have mine. We'll have to agree, to disagree.

Both give the games story another page, and offer new gameplay. It doesnt matter if one is "finished" or one is broken up in parts. Its pretty obvious with the correlation between the two to me. Just because boosters and episdoes are new, doesnt mean they are not the same as expansions. They both do the same thing, extend gameplay with a continuation of the story, add new levels, among other things.

If you get 5 hours per episode, for $54 or so, thats 15 hours. More gameplay than most games at the same price. I dont see what the big deal is. Most SP games I play dont have that many hours of gameplay for me. As I said, TR had just about 8 hours.

Wow, seems like alot of bitter feelings for Steam around here...

Personally, I wish everything was replaced by Steam...

yeah, I really like Steam. No more downloading individual patches and most important of all, I backup all my valve's games onto one DVD

I'm sure as hell gonna buy it. I don't care what yall say, HL2 with Lost Coast mod is still the best looking game out there. I really hope that the Lost Coast mod works with HL2:E1. If it does I'd pay 35!

Okay. Doesn't look like either of us will change our minds, so it's the less time consuming thing to do.

Single player FPS are all pretty boring. I pretty much only bought HL2 for multiplayer mods.

It should be in your GAMES menu in Steam. You just download it and play it. :p

Just downloaded and bought the $17.95 preload. Just finished FEAR and itching for something new and I really liked HL2. I do think $20 or $17.95 is a bit much for a pawltry few hours of game play.

Free is pushing it, but so is twenty f***ing dollars. $10 and maybe I'd consider it

FWIW, Half Life Deathmatch original running on the Source engine is pretty fun which is included and can be played immediately if you download from Steam. Haven't played it in forever but started a local server and had like 6 people jump on, was old school fun ;)

Lets see..

I bought HL2, turned out to be a return that someone had used the key..

So, about 4 weeks after i bought it, I finally got that straightened out with valave, however, I wasn't interested in playing it any more..

So, about 3 months later, I got interested, went to play it, it downloaded some stuff for an hour or so, then when i tried to put in my password, it didn't work. So i went through a password recovery deal, but instead of asking me to answer my secret question, ie like my pet's name, it asked me to remeber what my secret question was ?? WTF ?? How am I supposed to remember that ?

So, a few days later, I got that straightened out. But, again, I got interested in something else in the mean time.

So, I've never played HL2 yet..and the thing that is really annoying is, all i ever wanted to play was the single player game..

As someone has already mentioned, if the an episode is lacking we won't buy the next one. I think episodic content isn't a bad idea because it actually puts the pressure on the developer to produce something high quality if they want to keep making sales. As it stands now, Valve hasn't given me any reason to doubt them. With HL and HL2, they are 2-0 IMO.

Meh. I rarely 'finish' games. I use them for amusement, and get bored long before the final jumping puzzle over lava to get at the boss. I'm utterly uninterested in terrible per-entertainment-hour value booster packs.

Bioware did this too. They had expansions to NWN, and also 'premium modules' episodes. I have no idea if they managed to sell any of the boosters.
