there's no way I'm paying close to $50 CAD just to view a website 'faster' - who cares ? it's fast enough as it is & email is free compared to PM's which cost the subscriber fee to be useful.

I am a subscriber. I didn't do it for the speed or bigger message box. I did it to support Anandtech. I just love this place! :)

<< why ??? >>

Because $30/year is all but pocket change, considering how much money the majority (if not all) of us spend on stupid stuff. Don't buy a pack of smokes, a Big Slam, etc. for at least one time a month and you've made up all the money.

I don't blame people for not subscribing, particularly if:

a) they don't visit much
b) they're primarily OT
c) They have 7 kids to feed
d) they're running a 28.8 connection.

Things like the full-text search are widely underestimated, IMHO.

I am. I signed up for the $12 3 month subscription, as I thought maybe I wouldn't visit so often in the future :). I like the extra speed (on DSL). I spend many hours a day here (well more than I should at least), so I think its money well spent. The PM limit I don't really use, not that popular :). I've used the full text searches, its very nice.

Yes, I became a subscriber within hours of it being officially announced, although I was paying attention to the happenings here and at other, related forums, so I knew about it several hours in advance. I don't like the latency of the normal servers, so I subscribed right away.

P.S., I think Shimpi's cool, so I don't mind giving him a little bit of my loot.

no. for several reasons

1. since i've started coming here (sept 2000) I've gotten a whopping 2 PMs
2. since sept 2000 I've only posted over 300 times
3. the way they killed the bandwidth (purposely) for a couple of weeks prior to offering the subscriptions was a complete turn off.

thanks but no thanks, it's ok here but it's not as important to me as it seems to be for others.

I figured the $$$ i've saved from Hot Deals alone was worth the price for subscription.

The rest was just icing on the cake :)

I may be completely off my rocker but the way I understood it, they split the normal bandwidth (I assume for testing of the subscriber servers). Wish they could have just siphoned off the normal bandwidth. (Forgive my babblings... just woke up and the damn house is freezing... can see my breath.

I do agree that the practice was nigh on sneaky and underhanded. Call it a lack of awareness on their part, maybe, but being less than upfront with us wasn't exactly something that I hold in high esteem. )
