Poll: Are you AMD/Intel/Cyrix man?

used to be hardcore Intel, but now the tide has turned. never thought i'd say it but i'm an official AMD man and proud of it!

Fence-sitter 🙂

I like AMD for speed/price.
I like Intel for stability/compatibility.

It can get damn hot where I live and AMD based computers get really unstable in Summer, also I don't like having to use VIA chipsets.

Intel is just 2 damn costly.

I am open to both platforms. Whichever is fast and fits my needs...I really don't care what company makes my hardware, just how it performs.

I would say I am a Amd/Intel man
although 2 out of my 3 systems are AMD

Cyrix? nah.... never had one of those things

Hey, I dont think there are that many places that are hotter than California's summer, contrary to popular believe, a well built AMD/VIA system will have no problems running in hot summer conditions, and they can be very stable if you choose the right components, no compatibility problems I know of. It's hard to argue that AMD/VIA are as good as Intel in terms of stability and reliability these days. Oh yea, almost forgot to mention that I voted for "I don't really care".

I'm not partial to either side. The first system I built had a celeron 300a oced to 450+ because it was the best bargain at the time. Next I upgraded to a dual c366 at 550 setup with a bp6 when that was the popular setup.

Next I upgraded to a 600e coppermine CB0 stepping and a p3v4x. I overclocked it to 936. I had this setup for almost a year so I upgraded my cpu again. Currently I'm running a epox 8k7a and a thunderbird 1.33 ayhja at 1.52

I just buy the best/price performance solution, i'm not biased towards AMD or Intel. People should have flame wars over a cpu.

California would get hot for sure, I find that AMD get unstable when CPU is 50C and given that the temp in the room is already 40C to 46C there isn't much head room. I spose a good cooling system would help things though.

Personally even taking into account I don't like Via chipsets I would go for AMD if there CPU's ran cooler.

I think I speak for alot of people here saying that I am an AMD guy, and I think of myself as pretty loyal to AMD, but, in the rare situation that Intel all of a sudden got cheaper, faster, and basically all the stuff that AMD chips are, and AMD did all the stuff Intel does now, I would switch in a f*cking heartbeat!

<<California would get hot for sure, I find that AMD get unstable when CPU is 50C and given that the temp in the room is already 40C to 46C there isn't much head room. I spose a good cooling system would help things though.>>

I dont know if thats true, AMD specified that the Thunderbirds can operate up to 80C. My CPU borders around 50C during the hottest times of the day, never showed any signed of instability. The hottest my room has been up to 110F, which is pretty hot. And my cooling system, well, lets just say that I not using a Delta 7K fan, just a low profile 4800rpm fan. So, as you can see, the AMD CPUs are very tolerant to heat, and with a solid heatsink, you'll be A-OK in summer.

LXi's right..isn't it speced to run up to 95C though?

Yup..pulled this from the Athlon tech docs..

"The maximum die temperature is specified through
characterization at 90C for frequencies up to 1000 MHz, and
95C for frequencies 1100 MHz and above."

I think its 80C, but it could be 95C, in either case, I just dont think anyone's Tbird is running that hot right now.

AMD since the intro of the Athlon processor...., (Athlon500/550/650/700, Tbird750/1000/1100, Duron 600/600 = 9 AMD processors in the last 2 years or so 🙂 ) (ok, I still have some Intel systems too.... but I havent and will not buy a new Intelbased system for some time to come..... atleast I guess I wont.. to much money, to little performance )

Intel have now fought back and i think both AMD and Intel are similary matched with price and speed. (e.g Athlon and P4). Although, i would now always go with an AMD.

Everything I have now is Intel, used to run an AMD DX4-120 and a Cyrix 6x86 PR166. My next build will be AMD DDR. Price and performance of AMD vs Intel gives the edge to AMD.

If I were to make a new computer right now, I'd probably go with Intel. Ask me a month or so ago, I'd have said AMD. Ask me a year or so ago, I would've said Intel.

I usually get bored of one manufacturer or another after spending a while using their product.
