Are you a picky eater?

I'm not. I will eat almost anything and everything. I enjoy food, and I love to try new things.

I have raised my two children the same way. I do respect if they do not like something, but I always ask them to try it before they decide. I am proud to say that my kids will eat a mountain of broccoli, a fillet of fish, fresh raw tomatoes from the vine, and even spicy buffalo wings. I am proud that they can go to a friends house, or out to dinner with family and not have to specify how their meal is made.

Growing up, my parents always enforced the rule to eat everything on my plate, and I did whether I liked it or not. Liver and onions, pea soup, and grilled asparagus were some of the foods I ate as a child and grew to love. And I believe this has given me a great appreciation for food now that I'm older.

As an adult, I have come to hate picky eaters. I just don't understand it if someone has to have special instructions for their food. Just eat it and enjoy it I say.

Thread and poll inspired by this guy that doesn't like eggs (of all things!)

I loathe eggs. They make me gag. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone who can't eat them like me. They make my mom queasy sometimes but she'll still eat them on occasion. It makes breakfast burritos a difficult prospect and the nice lady at the taqueria makes fun of me when I order them without eggs. :(

Patty cooked medium. No onions. No pickles. No tomatoes. Extra mustard. Miraclewhip, not mayonnaise. Sesame seed buns. These instructions must be followed.

Most of the time picky eaters cannot help being picky. Ever heard the term supertaster? These people have a more taste buds than average and tastes that are mild to most people are intense to them.

For example: chili peppers burn will be more intense to them, as will the bitter taste in tonic water and the salt flavor in olives.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supertaster

This leads to those people being picky eaters. It's not because they wouldn't like to like a lot of these foods, they just can't get them past their over abundant, taste intensive, taste buds.

Sorry OP, you didn't train your kids to be avid eaters, they are like you, and born that way. ;)

I'm so incredibly picky, I would rather starve than eat food I don't like and that list is miles long.

I am a picky eater, but I am slowly overcoming it. I'm 31 now, and didnt even try Mexican until about a year ago and I now love that shit! Same with chinese, korean, indian food.

My son, unfortunately is very picky too. Kid doesnt even like a hamburger, wtf?

I voted maybe. I will eat anything once.

But I have an internal scale in terms of taste/quality and nutritional value. I will not eat anything that fails both of these traits more than once and only moderately on things that fail on one of these traits.

nah. I'll try nearly anything once.

the only things I couldn't see myself trying are:

-any meat/organs coming from above an animal's neck
-any meat/organs involved with the expulsion of waste (eg: intestines)
-any meat/organs involved in reproduction (eg: testicles)

My nephew is like that. He lives with us, and he hates all seafood, potatoes, corn, jelly (and anything jelly-like- pie, jello, etc), any cheese that isn't American, beef, and anything else that doesn't come out of a box. We tried catering to him for the first few weeks, but he eats nothing but high sodium processed crap and we can't live like that. I'm a bit of a chef too, so I like to make some "out of the ordinary" dishes. If he sees herbs, sauces, vegetables, or anything with color on his plate, he pushes it away.

Now we just make our normal meals, and if he doesn't like it, he either doesn't eat or has ramen noodles or bologna. He's 17 and came from a poor home, but damn, you'd think he'd learn to stretch his horizons by now.

I'll eat anything except for processed cheese. Stuff like Velveeta makes me want to vomit.

I will try almost anything once. But, after that once... I am likely to never taste it again.

I've literally gone without tasting very common foods for many years (bananas for instance) and sometimes forget what they taste like. I also forget a lot of the time whether I don't like it or not. I'm not always 100% sure and sometimes I have a gut feeling. (I've tasted a lot of foods) The gut feeling is almost always right. It's unfortunate.

I practically loathe all foods.

dont let him make ramen, tell him to eat what is presented or starve

eventually he will eat it

I think picky eaters are incredibly annoying.

It's one thing to prepare the foods you prefer to eat, its another to turn up your nose or sit there and pick out food from your meal. Unsightly and disgusting.

I've had haggis once... it was one of the most vile things I've ever eaten.

knowing what they are, I don't think I'd ever be able to bring myself to bite down on a rocky mountain oyster.

If its a medical condition that's one thing and perhaps you, my fragile friend, are that unlucky human being given genes that would have made a footnote of your existence. Luckily you happen to be born in the last hundred years, when food choices and diversity have never been greater. Even better, you're born in the USA, easily the most prosperous nation in the world.

Or rather, you have a poor upbringing that never taught you any better; parents that didn't understand how to teach their children the value of food and enjoy subtlety and complexity. Likely, you were not given any instruction or exposed to any experience in subtlety and complexity in other areas of your life.

You could sit there with your half-assed froot loops or learn to join the rest of humanity. Be that loser picking shit out of your food while everyone else is enjoying their meals. I'm sure your date would be wondering what kind of shithole she got herself into when you can't even clean your plate and can't stomach normal meals.

Idiots like yourself are the reason why people like me are punished for having different choices. You simply do not understand. Go taste horseshit. After that, you can realize the kind of experience I have with most foods.
