Another way of putting it is, are you a Democrat or Republican? If you are a greenie or communist or whatever, just pick the one that falls more in line with your beliefs (if possible).

No flames, no bickering. I want to see the distribution of people on these boards. Which side is more dominant (number-wise).

Please bump this if it falls so more people can see it.

Those two terms have been far too twisted by politicians falsely lebeling themselves as such to get any accurate results. Democrats and Republicans are just two sides to the same liberal coin now. Anyone who thinks being Republican equals conservative needs to look up what true conservatism really is. Better yet, maybe the Rupublicans in office should look it up and actually start behaving that way. Then, being conservative myself, I could vote for and support them in good conscience.

That observation is equally true of liberalism. The liberals are too damned scared to stand up for anything. That's why Dean is doing so well-he speaks his mind and he has a decent mind. The Republicans stand up for every hair- brained idea out there and scream it at the tops of their lungs. (The Texas Republican Party just supported the teaching of creation science in Texas classrooms. <groan>) Republicans are not really conservatives but simply agenda driven like most Dems. For instance, a true conservative would be aghast at the current spending levels of this administration and our quick involvement in the foreign affairs of governments not in our hemisphere at least. From that standpoint, many in America would be true conservatives.

Nice post.

Neither. Political extremism is a disease of both the mind, and the soul.

True enough.

I am Fiscally Conservative(don't spend money you don't have) and Socially Liberal(use money for the betterment of Society).

Why is there no middle ground in American politics?

In the UK the 3 main parties are the Liberal Democrats, Labour and the Conservatives.
(Dems, middle ground, Republicans)

Why is there no middle ground?!

In a perfect society, I think Republican ideology goes in line best. But its not a perfect society, so Liberal ideology is necessary. However, that often goes too far so definitely somewhere in the middle works best.

You hit on it. There are 2 parties in the US, and their liberal/conservative tendencies have varied somewhat over history. These two parties have made sure that a third does not come about. What you do have is a large independent population which chooses to align themselves with whichever party best represents their views. May of these are moderate. I myself have always voted Republican in past presidential elections for various reasons. This time I will vote Democratic, since I strongly oppose what the Republican party has become. That does not mean I have become a democrat, because the balance might tip the other way some day.

Labour - Left
Liberal Democrats - Center
Conservatives - Right

The Liberal Democrats never get elected to office on a national level unfortunately in the British system of government. :p

Libertarian with moderate old-fashioned conservative ideologies. Strong on the constitution, the rule of law, and limited government.

I would have clicked "conservative" but the neocons have stolen and tainted that label. Clicked "other" instead.
