Poll: Are there degrees of Racism?

So, what does ATOT consider to be racism?

i think sometimes we confuse preconceived notions, generalizations with racism. at one time, we only used the word racist to refer to people that had an active and aggressive hatred (KKK for example) for people of other races. now adays, you hear it being used about everything and to be honest it's sickening.

edit

based on your responses, i'm not sure you understand my poll.

i'm not asking what your own opinion about people of other races is, i'm asking which of the attitudes described would be considered a racist attitude by you.

stereotypes exist for a reason.
i honestly prejudge based on stereotypes, and if the person turns out to not fit the stereotype, good for him.

exactly, if i see a mexican, and i assume he's from mexico, does that assumption make me a racist?

Yes, from my judgment stereotypes are the biggest contributor to the issue. For example, common misconceptions we make on everyday experiences we've had. Some people have had negative experiences. Some people make judgments on no previous experiences other than hearsay. This is the worst type of prejudice in my opinion.

Both of those form some different degrees of racism.

EDit: Don't get me wrong, I'm guilty of sterotypeing too.

that's just like saying for married people, if you lusted for another woman, you've commited adultery.

that's nonsense. it's not adultery or racism until an action has taken place.

rac·ism ( P ) Pronunciation Key (rszm)
n.

1. The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
2. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.

Seems like even the belief is racism.

i believe true racism is simply hating people of other races. Racism is more about hatred and anger than anything else, imo. making a joke about another race, while it may be tasteless, doesn't qualify as true racism to me.

black comics continually imitate white people. charles barkeley can say "the thing white people don't understand..." on national TV. to me, those are distasteful and rude, but not racist in the worst sense. in today's world, i think racism has been diluted and cheapened.

making a presumption that a black guy is good at basketball doesn't equal hating him because of his color.

just my opinion of course. i'm sick of racism being cheapened today.

I just don't believe that stereotyping = 1. The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.

stereotyping doesn't assume that one race is SUPERIOR, it just states that one race is DIFFERENT.

"black people are better basketball players than non black people". is this racist? well, not really, it only meets on part of the definition you quoted, meets the first part, that race accounts for differences but not the second part that a particular race is "Superior".

i agree 100%.

the biggest problem in my opinion with the prevalent attitude towards racism is that it puts people like ross perot with his famous "You people" comment in the same category as Hitler, and that's just plain stupid.

Sterotypes are laziness reinforcing ignorance often masking xenophobia.

That's why it's not racist. Notice the "and" in there. You have to have both in order for 1 to be satisfied.

almost HALF of the people that voted feels like having preconcieved notions makes them racist. "I have preconceived notions about certain races, but once i meet someone of that race, i reserve judgement.". that's pretty sad. you guys have seriously been brainwashed by the NAACP.

that was my point.

stereotyping is not racist. it requires the element of belief of superiority. that's why this poll saddens me, half the people that voted believes just stereotyping makes them racist.
