Poll: Are "dvd extras" worthwhile?

So say you have a dvd stripped of the alternate takes and commentaries and angles, ect ect ect. Do you think it is a loss of some sort?
 
Depends on the movies. Kevin Smith DVD extras tend to be awesome, but some other DVDs (I'm looking at you Tears of the Sun) tend to have suck ass extras.
 
I'd prefer to have better video and audio (DTS). Out of all the discs I have I've seen the extras on maybe two discs. If they must do extras, put it on a separate disc.
 
Yeah, I'd rather keep video and audio and strip the extras. It's only a loss if the extras were actually worth seeing, majority are just filler.
 
The only ones that I have liked were the Commentary. Some of them are hilarious. (Family Guy)
 
it depends on the quality, just like anything else. some suppliments are nothing but studio pr fluff with everyone puckering and doing endless ass kissing. others are interesting and informative and entertaining. course the film itself has to be good for any suppliment to be worth bothering iwth in the first place.

and well, if its a movie that i bothered buying instead of renting, it better have special features, i won't bother if it doesn't. i've already seen the movie, i want to know more about it, see something new🙂

esp good for films before your time, classics. gives them context and other info you would have had no chance of knowing.
 
If they must do extras, make it a second disc.

All I want on my main disc is:

1) OAR, anamorphic if not 4:3 native.
2) DD + DTS (I would just say DTS, but to keep the people with no DTS decoders happy I'll add DD)
3) Anamorphic trailer

Nothing more. Static menus, none of the animated crap that has started to become the norm.

I must say that I NEVER watch the extras on any of my DVDs. It just doesn't interest me. BUT, if they started taking them away, I'd be pissed off. Weird, huh?
 
The quality of extras varies as much as the quality of the movies themselves.

That being said, the bonus material on all the collector's edition Pixar releases is phenomenal, as are the extended edition LOTR features. And as a cinemaphile, I love me some Criterion.
 
You need a plain, "Yes" option, I think they are worthwhile and enjoy watching them but the movie is still the best part of the disc.

2. Unfortunately, I have a decoder that does only Dolby Digital.
3. Yup. Teaser trailers would be good, too.

I agree with you on the menus. However, I believe that animated MENUS are fine, as long as the audio cuts off after a while (LOTR, for example). It's all the stupid transition crap in between menus that irritates me. When I select "Play Movie," I don't want to see something blowing up, and THEN see the movie. :frown:

Also, that standard THX logo that plays before many movies is getting really old. Give me the Pixar THX logos or the new one that plays before Lucasfilm movies.

I DO like a good commentary every now and then. They really don't take up a lot of space if done correctly (DD 2.0 @ 192 kbps). Just don't allow actors onto the commentary who say nothing but "this is my FAVORITE scene" twenty times throughout.

 
They are a waste of space if on the main disk. I don't much care if they are on a second disk.

OAR = Original Aspect Ratio
 
On some movies (Sci-Fi / Action) it's cool to see how they made the effects and things like that. The LotR series had Incredible Extras. Hours upon Hours and they rocked. Sometimes it's neat to watch the movie with the director's commentary just to see why they did things and to get their take on the movie. Adds a lot when you see it from a different perspective.

But on your average day movie, probably not real necessary.

yea. i always read a dvd review before i bother with most commentarys. they are ussually dead on if the commentary isn't worth bothering with.

Concur x2 :beer:😀 seriously, well put post, those are all things i desire when buying a dvd. (and if deleted scenes were cut because of time constraints, please re-master them and add them again via seamless branching [examples: blazing saddles needs this, so does heat]. the scenes do have to be good though, and relate to the original plot. like the t3 deleted scene, leave that on the cutting floor PLEASE!)
 
Amen on hating the menu transitions. I don't want to sit through the DVD people thinking they're clever, I want the damn movie to start when I hit play, not after some little snippet of action scene.
 
Usually comedies have the best extras. Anything with outtakes is good. Also the bigger budget and longer the movie tends to mean better extras. Then again most of those movies are the best movies anyways so they should have the best extras.
