AMD Sempron 64 3000+
DFI K8M800-MLVF
1.0 GB PC3200 (2x512)
PNY 6800 GT

Rig #2
Intel P4 2.4C 800MHz w/HT @ 3.0GHz (1GHz FSB)
Abit IC7
1.0 GB PC3200 (2x512)
PNY 6800 GT

Which would you pick? Which do you think would be faster for gaming (HL2, BF2, UT2004 etc etc) and lite photo editing?

Also, does the sempron overclock well?

Obviously these aren't first choice picks to be purchased soon...I've had the P4 computer and I just landed the Sempron mobo/CPU combo...i didn't know if it would outpreform the p4 or not? I just feel like my P4 2.4 is old...

No brainer.

Wait NvM. The sempron will be better for games and possitly for photoshop if you overclock it, but the 2.4C will be a better allaround processor. One thing to notice is the L2 cache. It sucks at 128, and although AMD platforms don't need that much cache, 128 is severerly crippling the performance of the chip. You can generally expect an OC of 2.2-2.5 from the semproms, more if your lucky. Don't quote me on that though, since all chips are different.

get the 2.4C @ 3.0
the 512kb will be better and not to mention the Hyperthreading Technology would run apps smoother.. as smooth as dual core x2 😛

Overclock the sempron and it will be faster at gaming, but the 2.4c will probably keep it's edge at photo editing, since thats one area where hyperthreading can actualy help.

Just curious...you are the first to speak up and say the sempron. Is there any reviews that might support this or do you know from experience?

Because I would prefer something like Sempron 3100+ and Abit KV8 Pro.

I stated above that I just got my hands on the sempron combo. I'm avoiding the phrase "bought" because it was more of a trade...and I got a pretty killer deal (traded a Sempron 2500+ (socket A) w/ asus mobo for the 64bit sempron and mobo)

Edit: My Postcount = birthyear sweeet

3400+ Sempron 64-bit review. I know you're looking @ a 3000+. But it's gives a good estimate of what you're going up against with your choice.

Your Sempron isn't a bad idea. It's far from slow like others would like to think (they probably never used one before and can't elaborate anything beneficial).

I vote Semp.

I got my Sempron 64 2800+ to 2.4 GHz on retail cooling. Since it has a bigger cache than the 3000+, you'd probably have better performance with the "cheaper" CPU.

As for the P4 2.4C, I'm not sure. I got my 2.4B up to 2.93 Ghz, but it wasn't entirely stable--not like my new Sempron 64 2800+. Plus, the 2.4C is, very simply, quite a bit more expensive.

Thanks for the link. This definately gives me hope for the chip...One of these mobo/proc combos will end up being sold.
