Poll: Am I the only one that uses Netscape anymore?

I just realized today that out of all the people I know (well the people's computers I know) I am the only person who uses Netscape (v4.75 at the moment).

Why do I use Netscape? At first it was my stand against IE and especially it's release of v5.0. As anyone knows, IE 5.0 took over as default browser, could not be removed easily, and was buggy as hell. To make things worse, a former student from my highschool (now a MS programmer) came to talk to us about Microsoft. His fanaticsm for Microsoft (and the fact that he loved working 80 hour weeks) made me disgusted with the browser and the OS in general.

Well guess what? IE 5.5 is out and it's nice and relatively bug-free. Netscape released v6 out and it's slow due to the fact that it's packed with bloatware.

Netscape v4.75 is well . . . buggy. If you open multiple browswer windows and close them, there are some memory leaks and your GUI resources stays rather low. It crashes randomly (not responding) and I have to manually shut down Netscape and reopen it. Also, due to the fact that IE is loaded during Window's bootup, IE doesn't have the load up time that Netscape does.

The only reasons I can think of to use Netscape now is:
1) anti-Microsoft (*sigh* But the idea's getting old, and MS has too much power)
2) when Netscape crashes, it doesn't crash Explorer like IE does
3) Familiarity. Because I use it so much . . . I'm too used to it. It just seems more tweakable and suited towards what I need.

I'm thinking about converting . . . 🙁

[edit]I'm also finding more and more sites that show up on Netscape improperly and I have to open up my IE browswer to view them correclty. Also, IE has better multi-language support where as when I use Netscape I need to use a 3rd party program to view CJK text.[/edit]

IE is the shiznats!!! No problems whatsoever...

However, on the Ibook at work, I use Netscape, think IE takes up too much ram, accessing the harddrive sucks...

I would use Netscape with Linux...but that's just cause I couldn't find IE for Linux...I wonder why 😕😛🙂

For Linux users: What options do you have for browsing? Do you choose Netscape because it's the best of what's offered? Would you choose IE if there was a Linux version of it?

I use netscape for email because I still think netscape messenger rocks outlooks world. I also prefer navigator over ie for browsers but I prefer opera for a browser over then both!

I know of only one person that uses Nutscrape.
IE is compatible with MS products...imagine that?
Why would i want to use something that isn't?

I would use netscape, but on the Windoes platform it the most unstable POS software that one can download. On other OS's like MacOS and Linux it pretty much rulez.

only ppl i know that use netscape are people who are "used to it" and can't comprehend that all browsers act the same way...

netscape is all but dead and gone... in my Web D&A class we didn't even discuss the differences in coding for one vs. the other...

i used to be a netscape only fan until it would constantly crash on me. tried it all. wouldnt work..so i said screw it...jumped on the ie bandwagon.

Anybody here use OPERA? Opera is turning out to a really good browser. It is at 5.02 now and been using it since version 3.5. Fastest load time of app itself and fastest load time of websites cuz it small size and all... Mulit-language, and multi-OS support. Not many people heard of it or used it before cuz it is not freeware. But it is ad supported now... Check it out: www.opera.com

I'm with tkim on this one, I used to LOVE Netscape. A lot of pages showed up better when in Netscape so I always used it, I just thought it was a nicer interface. While I do still like certain things about Netscape, I use IE 99% of the time now. Strangely enough though, just tonight I had to open up Netscape to view a page which IE won't. I'm using Netscape 4.76, because as you mentioned, v6 is bloated as hell and still buggy too.

Might as well jump on the IE band wagon, uses less memory, is extremely error free, and just overall works better. Hate to say it, but looks like MS did something right 😉

I used Opera for a while, but it leaks memory for some reason (v5). It's been up to around 35mb of usage for one browser open before. 🙁 :|

The only reason I'm still using Netscape is the bookmark.
Netscape stores all the bookmarks in ONE file unlike IE. The bookmark has immediate response when you click on it (as well as when you use the right click).

For those who want to convert bookmarks from Netscape to IE and vice versa, here's a nice shareware program you can run:
http://www.magnusbrading.com/bmc/

I use it all the time because my IE bookmarks are never updated. If you register, the registered version allows you to automatically synchronize bookmarks upon bootup which is a nice feature.
