Poll: Age old question: Win98SE or WinXP

i like win98se. i like winxp (pro). but win98se is fast, simple, and has easy driver support. xp is more stable, looks pretty, and has useful features. ive got a celeron 1.5, 512mb ram, geforce3ti200, 80gb hd. what should i install? (vote or give opinions 🙂)

If you are trying to decide between 98SE and Windows XP, why do you have so many other operating systems in the poll?

hey, i recently formatted and also faced the same question. i would suggest u got with XP is ur hardware can handle it. and judging by your post... ur hardware can more than handle xp. i just undressed the crappy default theme and used the classic them, and now, it looks and feels almost identical to win98 🙂

I like win2k over winXP, just because there's not as much crap installed by default... It also takes up less resources than XP...

I wouldnt touch any of the OS's still using the win9x kernel with a 10 foot pole...
 
I use Win98SE with 98Lite.......it's perfectly stable, fast (I use Win95 shell) and works with everything I have. Why would I use WinXP??? When I finally do upgrade, it'll be 2000 Pro. No XP for me.

The last thread like this got moved to Operating Systems today.

If you are a gamer, 98SE is fine. XP is a decent O/S with most of the latest driver support built in and (Pro) makes networking a breeze. It is also more stable than 98SE.

Some people are miffed at M$ because you must call to activate it. I run 98SE for gaming, Win2K for everything else and am playing around with XP as a second O/S (I am waiting for SP1 (final) to get serious about it).

I really don't "get" people saying Win98SE is so unstable.

I've been running it for years now with very few problems.

It's stable, quick, runs all my apps and games new and old great and by virtue of coming with every computer I purchased over the last few years I own serveral legal copies.

Of course I'm curious about win XP but with MS wanting $300 min to upgrade my 3 home P.C.s it would have to deliver something I don't have and need in an OS to warant that cost. Right now it doesn't so I'll stay just the way I am: Happy and $300 richer.

I know and that isn't my point - people still have to ACTIVATE it by communicating with M$ - who cares if it's by carrier pigeon? - some people despise that "feature".

eh i don't see what the big deal is. it's not like it's a huge hassle... it's like a click of a mouse button. i think the people who despise it are either people that change their components alot (the only people who have a legitimate concern, imo), or people who are pissed that it's harder to get a free os. oh and you have the privacy freaks 😛

I am just reporting MS's stupid policy of "activation" as a supposed deterrant to piracy. My guess would be that some people don't like to pay big bucks and then be insulted and inconvenienced by MS.

I have an older PC that seems to like 98se just fine.🙂 Since I have no reason to change, I won't.....😀 -kd5-

I dual boot XP and 98se... and I haven't used XP since January. :/ If you network then XP, but otherwise 98se all the way. 🙂

i wouldn't mind a retinal scan, but i would mind the drop of blood (loss of blood + pain + risk of infection = bad). i don't see how this is any worse than many of the other methods of authentication we encounter in our lives. what about when you call some tech support and they verify your identity with your address and ssn or something? i don't see many people getting pissed about that.

Giving out your SSN is not a good idea to tech support personnel. Notice that your bank or CC company does not ask for the whole thing.

And the point about MS activation is that it does meet its stated goal - to deter piracy. Rather it acts as an inconvenience to its honest customers.

ssn was just an example. the point is that nobody gets pissed about things like that. but for some reason they get really indignant when they have to make 1-2 extra mouse clicks. god forbid.
