This was a good topic on cnn today, just curious as to what atot'ers though. Personally, I believe the ring was a 25k symbol of the relationship, and after break up, it should go back to the person who bought it. Post thoughts...

A better question would be, "If she gave you the ring back, would you use it for the next girl?"

i agree. whoever bought it should keep the ring. it was their money in the beginning, so they should have the ring back. too bad most states think that it should be split 50/50

IF it is expensive, the person who bought it. Otherwise it is not worth arguing about.

no sh*t, if that's the worse they have to worry about in a split, they are damn lucky

By law- A engagement ring is given in contemplation of marriage..

A ring is a contractual aggreament-
If the marriage never took place then the contract was not fulfilled(sp?)..

The ring goes back to the man, and that goes for any court, standard practical law..

from what I've heard/read. the ring represents a contract between the two for the marriage...if the woman breaks off the engagement legally she has to return it...if the guy breaks it off the girl gets to keep it...

When I split from my first husband, I kept my engagement and wedding ring, but then I also paid for them.
When my daughter is old enough I will give them to her.

It depends on the circumstances. If the woman goes out and cheats on the guy and he finds out and breaks it off, he has every right to get the ring back. But, if the guy goes out and cheats on her, she has every right to keep it. If the woman breaks it off and the guy didn't do anything wrong, she should return the ring.

My ex is keeping the ring. I don't care. I don't want it.

She is planning on doing the same thing. Giving them to our daughter when she's older.

I think it's a decision the couple must make. A break up/separation is a huge thing, and there's much more to deal with than just rings.
No one should be concerned about etiquette and it's probably best they agree on a decision that will be ok on both sides.

If the guys dumps her, she should keep it; if the girl dumps the guy, she should give it back.

I had a friend who's fiancee dumped her and literally ripped the ring of her finger as he did it.:(

And yes, she's a really nice girl.

When my ex-wife decided that she had "committment issues" first thing I did was go into the bedroom and take the wedding rings. She said they were a gift and she should keep them, I told her she vowed to stay together etc. etc., and if she was going to walk out on me for some BS reason I was selling the rings. That is what I am doing.

you see, ive got a problem with this one. cause if i was a guy, and i bought the love of my life a 25k diamond enagement ring, and after a few years the love wore out and i wanted to leave her, id think about my damn ring and stay with her. but instead of workin things out, id be the biggest asshole and do everything i can so SHE can leave ME...just so i get my ring back. i dont think this is the way it should go.
