*POLL* ACLU - Good or Bad?

Analog

Lifer
The ACLU seems to piss off both conservatives and liberals (probably more conservatives). Let's see what AT thinks....

Well WITHOUT them, there would be a lot of things that would never have taken up a cause, including the civil rights movement amongst other things (right to choose, if you're into that)... granted they have done a *lot* of dumbass things, but they've also contributed a lot to society. We have to take the good with the bad, because sometimes the good they can do is immeasurable and the bad is just something stupid and not harmful anyway.

You need somebody to fight the 'other' fight and they do it -- for better or worse. Without them, it's definately worse though.

civil liberties are important, BUT the ACLU is just in it for the survival of the institution and not for the good of the "people".

Like the NAACP and most major trade unions, I feel that they are an institution founded on good intentions that has over time lost sight of its original goal and often does more harm than good.

I think they are plenty of crazies and fanatics on the opposite side of every issue, so we need the ACLU to help balance things out.

Strangely enough, Rush Limbaugh and the ACLU have 'joined' forces in order to keep his medical records private. Drug addiction makes for strange bedfellows.

I feel that it's no longer about civil liberties, but political-correctness

you don't keep up with their activities, do you? since when was it politically correct to defend the KKK?

it's not the drug addiction... generally people that are against the ACLU and similar things magically see the err in their ways once they are the ones that need defense and help.

the ACLU pisses off people because they defend everyone who is in danger of losing their civil rights. obviously, some people feel that civil rights should not be allowed for unpopular people or people with unpopular opinions, so that's where the conflict stems from.

the reason why the ACLU is more popular with liberals is that most of the people that are in danger of losing their rights are the people that either make up the liberal party, or people that the liberal party has an interest in. homeless, protestors, whatever other freaks there are... these are all people that are more likely to either be or be interested in by liberals.

Didn't they also support the kid with the anti-gay t-shirt?

And they are currently on the side of a reverend in Virginia who was banned from performing a baptism in a public park.

Once very good, now often screwed up, but still more good than bad.

Registering sex offenders, btw, has done more harm than good, just ask all the old homosexuals that were forced to sign up because they were convicted back in the '60s by the old anti-gay laws. It would be better if the punishment fit the crime and the more real hardcore rapists did more jail time in the first place, instead of the little slap on the wrist they get now.

And a teacher who was not allowed to wear a cross to work even underneath her clothing.

And the kids whose girlfriends' parents sudenly decide it's NOT ok to have sex with their underage daughter even though they're only a year apart in age.
