That's the way I remember the rule... Also supposed to use "an" in front of words that start with "h" as in "I'm going to an hotel to spend an evening with an hooker" :p

This is incorrect. You're supposed to use "an" when you have a vowel sound, not a vowel itself.

Example:

Incorrect--That is an European car.

Correct--That is a European car.

You only use "an" in front of "h" when it is used in a measurement of time (i.e. an hour), IIRC.

AsianriceX is completely correct. The "an" in front of "h" words is nothing more than a colloquialism stemming from the silent "h" in English. Hotel = 'Otel, Hammock = 'Ammock, and so on. The sound determines the use of "a" or "an". Always.

This sums it all up. Excellent post.

"I am a user." -- The first sound in "user" is a "yoo", which is a consonant sound.

"I need an umbrella." -- The first sound is "uh", which is a vowel sound.

"It will take an hour." -- The word begins with a consonant, but the first sound is "ow", a vowel sound.

you don't use "an" in front of all words that start with "h" as flyermax suggested.

if you don't believe me, try typing "i walked into an hotel" into word and see what the grammar thing says.

Heh, I remember learning that rule during the Reading Block in 3rd grade. Some other kid got it wrong and for some reason, that memory is clear as day for me.

Thank you Public Education System!

are you retarded? How do you pronounce hotel? It's not oh-tell...it's hoe-tell. Sure sounds like you pronounce the h to me.

"I'm going to stay in a (i would say it as uh) hotel tonight"

If that's not the definition of retarded, I don't know what is. This grammar stuff seems to get me carried away

I just say whatever feels the most natural to me. I don't think anybody is going to get really offended if I happen to pick the wrong one. I say "a user", "a hotel", "an hour", and "an owl".
