POLL: 9700 pro or 9800 NP

just putting a system together for a friend. he is an avid gamer. since these two cards are priced very similar, i cant decide which to get. please tell me why you would get one over the other! thanx

i........err.....umm........ 10th? the 9800 np 😛

about the same price as the 9700 pro, ability to support the newer features, if ur lucky u'll get 2.8 or 3 ns ram instead of the 3.3.....then u can just flash to pro....... but that's only if ur lucky

First off, the 9700Pro IS faster than the 9800NP. Yes the 9800 can OC higher IF he has the good RAM and that is no guarantee.

shady06, aren't u motivated by my good fortune/ short lived bad fortune/ good good fortune experience with the Saphire 9800? 😉

get the 9800

No, it is just that the good ram overclocks more than the "bad" stuff. You probably can still ultimately get it faster than the 9700 Pro will go.

does anybody have link with the latest benchmarks comparing all these cards from ATI & nvidia? thinking about taking plunge for new card

At standard speeds the two cards are pretty much equal, But overclocking the 9800's core to 400+ is near guaranteed and a lot of people have had good luck with the memory also. Another vote for the 9800np- Mine (Samsung3.3) has hit 435/375, but I run it at 410/350 most of the time.

Haven't played a game yet to need to keep my 9800 np overclocked. Even at Quality 4x/16x High detail I get very smooth framerates.

Hm, that statement contradicts myself from what I posted in another thread....

*sticks on his thinking cap

What are you trying to say? Of course the good RAM overclocks more than the bad stuff. And yes you can get it faster than hte 9700 Ultimately, but thats with OCing. The fact is, the 9700Pro IS faster than the 9800 Pro. You can't say it isn't just because of overclocking.

I'm guessing that's a typo

The 9800 core has been stated to take 20% less of a performance hit when AA/AF is enabled then the 9700 pro.
