Poll: $300 for second system?

Chaotic42

Would you guys spend $300 to get a dual 1800+ system with 256MB memory, nominal hard drive space, and Windows 2000 up and running as a second system?

I kind of want to do it, but it seems hard to justify the price. I could use it to off-load some rendering over the network, but that doesn't seem worth the money.

What do you think?

I've got a network with 5 computers, plus a notebook, so I chose no, but if I didn't have all the extra machines, I might go for it.

Your voting on whether he should, not you. You don't use your own variables to decide for him, that just doesn't make any sense.

I'm selling a system to a friend that's much better than that one except for the dual processor part (a single 2500+ instead, but includes 9800pro, 80gig, 512mb, etc.).

Unless you really want to have a dual processor system to mess around with, I don't think it would be worth it.

Well, what spurred this was that I have $54 store credit at a mom-and-pop computer store. I don't know what to get from there, so I was thinking a case for my existing processors and motherboard.

i built my full a64 system with $500.. i'm sure you could build one a bit cheaper if you found some good deals 🙂

for about $500 i got
s754 2800+ $120
xp-90 and panaflo ~$50
abit kv8-pro $80
512mb corsair value select $45
80gb seagate barracuda w/ ncq $65
abit 9550 128mb 128bit overclocked a bit $65
ams gmono case and psu $65

comes out to ~$490 + shipping.. you could get an msi board, refurbished barracuda, and stick with stock hsf and save probably $80-100.. also you may want to get a cheapo video card, saving even more (getting fairly close to $300)
