I got up a job up in WA and they want me to start ASAP. However I know someone in the company who is pretty high up, and he can basically bump my start date up closer or further, depending on what I need (Since I'm moving from CA... that's why he's giving me the ability to speak with him about my start date and change it etc).

I'm thinking of giving my notice on Monday and staying only 2 weeks and then just hauling my things up there afterwards.

However 2 weeks seems too short of notice to me ... though it's "customary"

How long of a notice do you guys give when quitting?

[edit]

A bit of background info on what I do:

Personally, I started as an assistant to him. (My boss is a financial advisor to some multi-millionaires and business owners)

But then my position quickly changed into ... well ... everything. I'm now managing his "company," giving direction to a few assistants of my own. But I report to him directly and he gives his marching orders to me directly, and I in turn, ask my assistants to help me carry out those instructions. I deal with all his cash flow, clients, and basically everything.

The thing is, I haven't worked here for too long, I actually only started here March of this year ... and only received one day of training when I started when the other gal had quit. At first I was his only assistant, but now I have 2 more people (part timers) working under me as my assistants.

Unless you do something very important in your current job, just give them 2 weeks. Look out for yourself, not your soon to be ex-employer.

id be comfortable with 2 weeks (though the last 2 people I have known to quit were told to get the f out posthaste and were paid out those last 2 weeks)

Depends on the amount of time it takes to replace you. 2 weeks is fairly typical. But for some jobs, you can be replaced tomorrow, and the boss may let you leave today. For other jobs, it is just ethically right to give them enough time to find a replacement. Do you have to stay that long? No. But forget about using anyone at your old job as a future refererence. I say, don't burn the bridges that you have crossed.

If you like your boss and your workplace, you have a choice but if you couldn't care less, give them what you're obligated to give -- your 2 weeks notice.

If it's an at-will state, you don't have to give 2 minutes notice. Just like they don't have to give you notice to can your ass.

1. Give two weeks notice.
2. take two weeks vacation + sick time
3. Start work at new job right away.
4. Profit!

It's pretty sweet pulling in two paychecks for two weeks.
