i believe 1994 was the year they mandated the new freon on cars. Many cars were already fitted with the new stuff in 1992 and 1993, but I am one of the unlucky one who got stuck with old freon that cost a fortune.

If you own 1993-1994 model year car, can you tell me the make, model and the freon type? I'm just curious how commonly they used the old r 12 until the very last minute.

That sounds extrordinarily dangerous.

Why?

It's such a small amount that even if it DID burn (extremely unlikely) all you'd damage would be a few hoses.

BTW, R134 is flammable too.

but if the evaporator leaks and someone is smoking.. you'll have flame coming out of a vent.

The odds of it being high enough concentration to be flammable are slim, plus (again) you're looking at very small quantities.

Nobody smokes in my car anyway.

Obviously it's not for everyone, if you're scared of it don't do it.

For me, though, $5 to fill my A/C is a hell of a lot better than $100+, especially when I don't even know if it works.

93 Dodge Dakota, should have R-12, but I don't know for certain since it has a new compressor and new hoses on it. There are no stickers indicating a chance to R-134a, so I assume that it still just has R-12. Works very well!

BTW, Propane is an excellent refrigerant.

94'Dakota, R-12,100.5k miles. Never been repaired or serviced.

Popsicles fly out of the dash registers :D R-12>>R-134a. Make sure the condenser fins stay free of dirt, just as you
keep your CPU's heat sink fins clean and run the AC pump once a week for 10 minuets to keep the internal seals moist
with refrigerant oil.

Only recirculate the air in the car on extremely hot/humid days and the evaporator will not develop a stench :disgust:
Air generally gets recirculated at the max setting on the control panel.
