Poll: 1394b will overtake USB 2.0?

Is 1394b a waste? Most digital cameras (even $7000+ high-end SLR) utilize a USB 2.0 interface. Even if new cameras do have a Firewire II port, they most likely will have an additional USB 2.0 port as well. However, 1394b does have 2x the transfer speed of USB, and thus might become standard in a year or so. What do you think?

Doubtful, USB/USB 2.0 is a standard feature on just about all mainbaords due to the fact that ubiquitous peripherals like mice and keyboards use it, while firewire is only included with mid- to high-level mainboards (and even then you get 1 or 2 firewire port and 6 to 10 USB). It just doesn't have the necessary presence, regardless of its technical merits over USB 2.0, and there's no driving force to improve its saturation (keyboards and mice are never going to use firewire, there's just no reason to transition them from USB to firewire). Firewire will probably hang around for quite some time, but I doubt it's ever going to overtake (or come close to overtaking) USB.

No, though there is some crossover, they are designed for different peripherals, and will always coexist. Firewire will never be the standard for keyboards and mice, while USB will never be the standard for digital video (DV is too entrenched to be replaced). One is not designed to replace the other.

And then there's a third option: eSATA has so much potential, hopefully they can come up with something for peripherals.

Why mess with something that works?

Interesting little article. It jogged my memory that back when the G4 was released, firewire was supposed to be the key feature. Everyone thought it would be the next big thing. Too bad apple screwed it up.

Personally, I prefere firewire since it seems to have a higher sustained transfer than USB. But for standard items like mouse, keyboard and the likes, USB is much easier. But when it comes to DV firewire is the only way to go. I believe both interface will co-exist for a long time.
