Isn't this a fairly pitiful subwoofer?

pitiful is subjective, right? it has 5 out of 5 eggs with 544 reviews, which means most of the reviewers have the proper expectations for a $90 product (which is effectively selling for $70 right now).

Were talking about a product that's only one step up from this:

Problem is all $100 subs are pitiful, you need to step up closer to $200 to get something decent (like BIC F12).

Edit:
Honestly, instead of wasting the $100 on a crap sub you'd be better off spending it on a decent quality pair of speakers.
A decent 2.0 system is far better than a crap 2.1

I bought one to hook up to my PC for $69 from ABC warehouse 6 or 7 years ago. I took it back immediately. It made more port noise than bass, complete joke to even call it a subwoofer. And I'm a big Polk Audio fan.

You'd almost wonder why it has 5 star reviews...except so many people think that rattling noises are "good bass".

The PSW505 has recently been $150 AR, and it's probably the best sub for the money at that price.

I'd wait for it.
