i want to become more politically aware
i was wondering, are there any sites any one would recommend to get ideas about the parties/how things work? im relatively new to this, so anything would help.

start reading the politics section of major newspapers (Washington Post, NY Times, etc). also, watch/tivo Meet the Press on Sunday mornings.

it's not that I'm a huge liberal, I just think that the quality of writing in the Washington Post and the NY Times is of a much higher caliber than, say, the Washington Times or the NY Post.

fvck all the 24-hour news channels, though.

edit: for some good right-wing news, GoogleNews offers a good alternative
 
Since when is GoogleNews right winged?

All they do is take stories from various other news sources and post them at one place. Liberals seem to think that "regular" news reporting is right winged simply because they are so used to that liberal slant they have been hearing since birth.
