Swimming lessons should be made part of every Canadian child's education, the federal minister responsible for public health said in the wake of several drownings this summer.

Doesn't seem like such a crazy idea, although it'd be hard to implement and pay for something like that... I mean it won't prevent all drownings but it couldn't hurt.

This is aimed a little younger though, it was brought on by 6 drownings this past weekend in the area, one 6 year old child.

one of my prof said, you can ask the government to pass all the legislation you want, but you can never legislate stupidity and common sense

Strong swimmers can still drown if they place themselves in stupid situations.

I don't see how you can argue against this without saying that things like reading lessons or math lessons shouldn't be mandatory either.

I don't know how to swim. You know how I avoid drowning? Nah, I won't tell you, I want to keep that secret safe with me!

You must be pretty proud of your inability to do something that can be learned in a day, and most 7 year olds can do. You have every right to remain ignorant if you want, but I don't get how people can go through thier entire lives like that.

hey, anything that gets kids more exercise during school I am all for plus I think that every kid should learn to swim.

We had swimming lessons through school when I was in grade five but I feel thats kind of old, they should do it starting in grade 1. I started swimming when I was 3 and I love it.

every child should learn how to swim, but this isn't something the government needs to be regulating.

I have a couple of friends who at the age of 18 can still not swim. I was never taught to swim. It was just something that came naturally. I just don't see how if you're thrown into water, you can't figure out how to stay afloat.

Maybe what they could do is make the first few levels of swimming lessons free at the pools so that everyone is free to learn the basics. If you want the more advanced training, then you pay for it.

Canada knows that the ice cap are going to melt. So they are actually going to be ahead of the US in something!

Kneejerk reaction.

It would really backfire if more kids die during swimming lessons than the drownings they're trying to prevent.
