"You don't go buying a boat when you can barely pay your mortgage," Obama said. "You don't blow a bunch of cash on Vegas when you're trying to save for college. You prioritize. You make tough choices."

The comments quickly sparked a flurry of reaction in the Silver State, which supported Obama in the 2008 election. Nevada had an unemployment rate of 13 percent in December.

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman said during a hastily called news conference that Obama is no friend to Las Vegas and would not be welcomed here if he visits.

"I'll do everything I can to give him the boot," Goodman said. "This president is a real slow learner."

Why is this even a news story? Are people really this petty? I mean I know there are folks here that are, but the general public? The president suggests that it is unwise to blow your kid's college fund in Las Vegas and this is somehow controversial?

Meh. Vegas is understandably pissed (Obama has a habit of bashing Vegas), but most folks understand that Las Vegas is a place designed to remove discretionary income and therefore it's not a good idea to go there and drop a load of non-discretionary income that is needed elsewhere. His comments are amusing considering his spending and new proposals, but hardly controversial. Sucks to be Nevada with 13% unemployment, but it would be more foolish for Obama to recommend that people go to Vegas.

Obama has constantly singled out and picked on Las Vegas which is hurting severely because of the lack of tourism which is where most of their money comes from. The mayor has every right to call him out on it (he's a Democrat by the way).

When Hussein first took a few strikes at Vegas the mayor even invited him to speak with him when he was in nevada. The coward of course refused.

The problem is Obama hates Las Vegas. It's a place of freedom where people can do just about anything they want. It's very American and O hates anything remotely American.

Las Vegas is wrong. They're understandably sensitive - Nevada's big economic activity seems to be tourism - and this was 'negative' abuot going to Vegas.

But look at the context - that it's a luxury - and then realize it was free marketig that Obama was singling out Vegas as an especially attractive place to use your fun money.

THey should thank him, but they're sensitive with the bad economy and plummeted tourism.

Read your own article. After he first slammed them companies immediately pulled out of conferences in vegas. He has directly harmed the city and continues to do so. I go to vegas frequently and they're practically begging me to come, they're hurting.
