WARSAW, Poland - Judges found a Polish woman guilty Thursday of killing five of her newborn children and then sentenced her to life in prison.
The woman, identified only as Jolanta K., 40, was convicted of drowning her five babies _ four boys and a girl _ between 1992 and 2002. The judges in the eastern city of Lublin then imposed 25-year sentences for each baby slain _ the equivalent of a life sentence under Polish law.
During the trial, the woman confessed to killing three children but said her husband had pressured her. But judges said her testimony was incoherent and untrustworthy.
Her husband denied knowledge of the killings and was acquitted.
The couple have four other children between the ages of 15 and 20.
