Polish clear plastic?

If clear plastic has been damaged from chemicals, and I wet sand, then use some polish (ie. car polish, plastic polish), can I make it look as translucent as new?

When I was in the service the aircraft I worked on had "plastic" canopy's. We had to use polish on them to take out scratches.

I used Simichrome ( Metal polish) on the lens's on my car, and another I restored for someone. They came out looking as good as new.

It IS a lot of work though!

So you used the stuff made for metal, on plastic? Or did they have a different plalstic polish?
I've flown many a plane that sure needed the plastic windshield polished.
