Animal welfare advocates have said police could have used nonfatal techniques to contain the gorilla, including using rubber bullets or cornering it.

Yea ok. lets shoot an enraged gorilla with rubber bullets and hope he sticks his arms up and surrenders. Or better yet, lets corner a really pissed off gorilla and lets hope he doesnt charge us and kill somebody.

It says he snatched a toddler in his teeth, but he must not have hurt it very badly or wouldn't that be in the story ? Sounds like he must have been kind of gentle actually, for a gorilla..

Dallas newspaper reports two SWAT guys kind of "met" it in a corridor. Honestly, if a 500lb gorilla is charging at you, the choice seems pretty clear cut to me.

It was easy for the advocates to say how much excessive force was used, or how the police could've solved the problem other ways. Put them in the zoo and have the 400 pounder charge toward them and see what happens.

Police have said officers were forced to shoot the charging gorilla after it came within 15 feet of them.

but gorillas are the gentle ones.
chimps and other small apes are the really mean ones.

"It was mayhem," Mike Glover, the zoo's emergency weapons team leader, wrote concerning the March 18 escape. "Nonzoo personnel were all over the site and approaching any zoo staffer they could find with questions and instructions. They were prepared to move in and frustrated that we were holding them up."

yes it is easy for the advocates to complain about excessive force, because they wouldn't be rushing into a situation they knew nothing about and ignoring the people best trained for such situations.

Too strange...

My wife was @ the Dallas Zoo the day before this happened with our kids and was getting a personal tour from one of the Zoo employees, and she commented to him that one of the gorillas looked really angry.

The Zoo was PACKED (spring break) after a relatively quiet winter, the poor gorilla must have freaked out on the crowds.

they're just enraged because they had 5 years worth of drills and the cops completely ignored the protocol.

Despite more than five years of emergency drills together, police officers did not cooperate with zoo staff on March 18 as they tried to subdue Jabari, The Dallas Morning News reported, citing zoo records.

but in the end it was probably the smart thing to do, if it was a situation where in the end you'd either have 1 dead SWAT guy or 1 dead gorilla I'd probably pick the dead gorilla.
