MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- Police used a stun gun on a 6-year-old boy in his principal's office because he was wielding a piece of glass and threatening to hurt himself, officials said Thursday.

The boy, who was not identified, was shocked with 50,000 volts on October 20 at Kelsey Pharr Elementary School.

Principal Maria Mason called 911 after the child broke a picture frame in her office and waved a piece of glass, holding a security guard back.

When two Miami-Dade County police officers and a school officer arrived, the boy had already cut himself under his eye and on his hand.

The officers talked to the boy without success. When the boy cut his own leg, one officer shocked him with a Taser and another grabbed him to prevent him from falling, police said.

He was treated and taken to a hospital, where he was committed for psychiatric evaluation.

"By using the Taser, we were able to stop the situation, stop him from hurting himself," police spokesman Juan DelCastillo told The Miami Herald.

The case was under review.

That is a little strange.

LMAO! How hard is it to move quicker than a 6 year old and grab his stupid hand?

What should they have done? I think they did their job perfectly. They prevented him from injuring himself further, and they ensured their own safety. GG Cops.

No sh!t. Even with a good sized piece of glass, you aught to be able to maybe get a minor injury at most unless this kid is the child of speedy gonzales.

They should have just shot him. Nothing like a bullet wound to remind a person how stupid they are.

Hm... I wonder why they used non-lethal force? Society will end up paying for that mistake in the future. :D

Perhaps the kid knew the location of his carotid artery.

Tazers have been known to kill people. What if this had been one of those cases?

well since none of us were there we don't really know the extent to how much this kid was whacking out.
but i'll bet the police didn't use the gun on him for fun.

a 6-year old can still go swinging his arms, making it difficult to approach him without getting hurt. I think a 6-year old who's willing to cut himself up with a piece of glass deserves the tazer to prevent injuring himself more.

I think he did his job fine. The kid had a piece of glass that was obviously sharp enough to cut and he was obviously not afraid to use it. Just cuz he's 6 doesn't mean he can't slash your wrist.

So what's the problem here?

ok honestly when i read the title I was thinking WTF are the officers doing. But after reading it and seeing how the kid did physically harm himself after in front of the police, I think they did their job appropriatly. Hell one of the officers was nice enough to catch the kid before he fell.

it's still reckless. tazers are design to be used on adults, not 6 year old gids. tazers can killed people. recently in the news there have been a couple of cases even. one in dallas was a 21 year old guy.
