They also save lifes. I am here in Wilmington NC and we, for the 4th straight year, have the highest rate of accidnets of ALL of NC, and we are one of the smallest counties. I was in a Motorcycle accident April 2003, so I know how bad it is here.
Accidents and deaths at ALL the intersections have dropped down to almost 0.

Now mind you the way they set it up there was not right. They were not the worst intersections, BUT the ones the COMPANY thought they could make the most money.

I am Pro red light cameras, but Con with them being run by outsiders.

Good.

And, how can you not know that fines are a income source for the authorities?
You think they exist now just to protect you?

no crap. i have read plenty of reports of them reducing the time on green and yellow lights to catch people. one of the TV news shows did that. think it was 60 minutes or 20/20.

we have some in town. i always have my foot on the break when i come up to it. the light is extremely fast. whenever something like this is put in a corprations hands its bound to get abused.

Incorrect. They was MIS-proven a long time ago. In fact SOME of the intersections they added a LITTLE extra time to them. Congress men in DC tried saying this, after they found out they could not get out of the ticket, but it back fired on them.
The Cameras READ off the light, they do NOT control it.

I just remember how they were talking about it here locally Raleigh, NC and talking about how much it's going to cost. For the amount of money they were talking about, they could hire extra cops to sit at those intersections 24/7 for 10-20 years. Whoever votes in favor of this, I would like to see their financial records or else require them to take an IQ test.

Red light cameras are basically the same thing as police giving you a ticket on a deserted highway, in a construction zone where nobody has been working for weeks, or speed traps like in the Dukes of Hazard

I've read that some cities in my area have been reprimanded by the manufacturers for setting them to go off too soon to purposely drive up revenue.

If you're in California remove your front plate to avoid being ticketed by these things. No front plate = happy you.

Can't states that require you to have front and back plates, pull you over if you are local and missing one

You know I read somewhere you are a idiot.... and you just proved it.

They go off when the red light is on. So if they went off any sooner the piture would have you in the intercetion with either a yellow or green light.

Welcome to London. Due to the problems with the IRA they can track you from the moment you enter the town until you leave and I am sure in other large cities. That is too much information in my opinion but I feel since 9/11 that is the way the US is slowly heading...

Well it cost Wilmington NOTHING to have them. That is why they contract them out to companies.
It would also not cost that much for most type of machines, some more some less.

And they are NOT the same thing as getting a ticket on some back road, we are talking about BUSY intersections.
Don't want a ticket, EASY, don't run a red light.

I guess so. In my 10+ years of driving I've never been popped for it, it's so commonplace.

You seem very defensive over this stepping stone to 1984. Why?

hmm i tried finding some of the reports i have read. only one i seen had a guy actually winning and the city haveing to repay $500,000 in tickets. The yellow light was 3.5 seconds and the camera was takeing pictures at 3 seconds and nailing people with the ticket.

but so far you are correct. i cant find anything that shows them actually reducing the time. though i could have sworn i read and seen them before.

edit: before merlin gets on and tells me im wrong again llink! to story!

I thought redlight cameras take a picture of the REAR of your car? Why would taking off your front plate help?

SOME systems take pictures of the front.

There are a PILE of different systems out there, so each one is different.

There's a list of requirements in order for it to be a valid "capture." One of which is a shot of both plates, and a clear view of the driver. No front plate = no ticket.

I'm living proof, having gotten photographed twice in the past 3 years yet never being cited for it.

How do you know you were photographed if you weren't cited?

Edit: Dang, guess you can't answer that since you got a vacation.

Sounds like a bad system design. BUT as you even said, they did NOT change the timeing of the lights.

The ones around here go off when you CROSS the line AND the light is already red. So even if you run the light, as long as your REAR tires are JUST over the meter lines, you will not get a ticket. BUT if you cross the lines and the light is ALREADY red, then you got a ticket coming.

I am PRO red light cameras, IF they are good quality and installed correct. I have seen quite a few deaths because of idiots that can't wait less then a minute for a light to change. Myself, and my dad, were almost killed in our bike accidnets, and I have SCRAPPED body parts off the road when I drove a tow truck YEARS ago. Around here, and most areas, it is the tow truck drivers job to CLEAN the accident up. So if some EXTRA parts were left behind then we have to dispose of them or have the med people come get them.

So DON'T run a red light if you can't afford it, and grow up and act like an adult.

Oh and its mArlin, I don't do magic tricks. ;)

Ok i just showed one after 5 minutes of googleing (and i suck at it!). How many more are there out there? As i said i have read/seen reports that have stated they have actually reduced the time on some lights.

Putting something like this in the hands of a corpration is just asking for trouble.
Im against these. Putting something like this in the hands of a company is wrong.

At least here in Toledo they have the decency to put up signs warning drivers there are cameras. And these cameras are big and ground level. When I lived in Omaha, they had no such signs and the cameras were tiny and put up high so you couldn't see them. Obviously, they were intending to catch people on purpose. Of course, one of the intersections here in Toledo that has a camera has no grip whatsoever on the road so when I have to brake when the yellow comes up, my car has a hard time gripping.

As far as I see it, you shouldn't be running red lights and the police have to be paid somehow to patrol the streets and make the city safe to live in. I don't mind cameras since I tend not to run red lights (just the yellows of course). And if I get caught by a camera, then I have to live with it since it was my own fault for running the red light.

I don't think anyone is questioning how it would benefit towards drivers who intentionally run red lights. It's cases where you never did cross through the light, or you had to cross but due to an ambulance or police car with their sirens on behind you, with no shoulder to pull over to. In these situations you are guilty until proven innocent and that is just wrong.
