Because they sell, and are just entertaining enough to stave off revolt. It's easier doing the same thing over and over than it is being creative.

Most of those shows don't actually show any real police work. People like the drama involved, not the actual police aspect.

Also, people hate the police because generally speaking, when they show up, it's bad news for someone.

I don't understand the police shows. I thought Miami Vice kind of ended that theme....I was wrong.

Now they have a CSI for every fuckin city out there......it's ridicules. But if people watch it/like it....more power to them I guess.

I don't watch ANY of them, and probably never will either.

I see them at my mother's house, and I don't know what I'm watching. The characters are familiar, yet different. It's entertaining enough to keep my attention; better than the entertainment "news" and partisan hackery she watches most of the time anyway.

police and procedural shows are currently the only palatable moral stories for modern post industrial society. right triumphing over wrong, justice being served, the system actually working are things we want to believe in so we seek them from our fiction.

over the past 30 years tv has transitioned from medical and legal shows because health insurance and lawyers in general have built up a lot of resentment. but police stories and mystery/investigations are still relatively pure of heart from a worthiness standpoint.

If everyone hates the police so much, why are police shows so numerous and popular?

Schadenfreude.

Everyone hates the police when the police are coming for them personally, but everyone loves to see other people bent over the hood of a squad car.

The fear we feel in an uncertain world is assuaged by the security we feel when there are guardians out there with our best interests in mind.
