Indefinite suspension for the cop because he was lazy to back up and get out using another path.

Deer was actually a threat based on location--jump out on that road, there's an injury and a damaged car(s).

On top of that, they realized the deer was injured, and would just die in a matter of days--Not a damn deer would stand there with all that harassment. Might as well turn it into meat to feed the benevolent association.

Those guys actually took their time assessing the situation and made the right call, imo. Their accents may sound like the language of rednecks to some, but it doesn't automatically make them idiots.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should. But, for a prey, that deer is pretty stupid.

EDIT: Looks like the deer may have been injured...

Who ever said that deer were smart?

We've all heard of the phrase deer in headlights. That deer was frozen there since it found itself caught in the middle of civilization with tons of lights and sounds. It's a baffling alternative to the fight or flight response that somehow made through natural selection.

But yeah.. it's rather daft to call a deer stupid for freezing.

Sure that's why he shot the deer. Did you watch the video? At 1:40 the cameraman states the deer is lame and needs to be put down. Oh that's right you lipped to the end to watch Bambi go down. I hate cops more then the next guy, but putting a lame animal down isn't grounds for suspension.

There was no threat. Traffic was stopped. Could have even kicked the deer in the ass, literally, and he would have moved. If not, do it again or shove him with your foot.

Not hard.

I hope the cop gets his ass reamed for such a stupid decision.

You could make the argument that he mitigated the risk of the deer colliding with a car on the highway.

Still, I would have tried turning off all the lights and just scaring him away (after blocking traffic.)

You realize a deer can really fuck you up, right? Hunters are killed by deer every year. I wouldn't go kicking one.

Did you all skip to the end? Someone change the title to Police Officer puts down wounded Deer!

Then start a new thread for idiots that don't watch videos before commenting.

true. there were enough donut-swilling hillbillies around with cameras and guns in their hands to make that happen on that road, at that hour. pretty odd that their first best option was to cap it. :hmm:

I watched the whole video. There was absolutely no need to shoot that deer despite it being 'lame'. Kick it til it leaves the road and let the wolves eat it for breakfast!

Yeah, not by deer like the one in the video. Let's be honest.

were you standing next to that deer?

those fuckers can be stoners in paradise one second, then a raging maul of blood and sinew the next.

Especially when injured

you never know.

I'm guessing the guys in this thread suggesting that you kick a deer are some real outdoorsmen. Kicking wild animals: a great idea since never.

Deer was lame. They probably could have tried calling a wildlife shelter that would have rehabilitated it, however if no such facility was available they made the correct decision. The deer knew it was dead, it would have attempted to flee if it thought it had a chance.

Apparently they don't run away from cars. Those animals have no instinct to survive.

If a citizen had done this he'd be charged for poaching, and for discharging a firearm in a public place (or some random law related to firearms that they'd dig up).

Deer was a bit retarded though, probably stunned. The whole "deer in the headlights" saying probably actually is true.

I would just have threw a small stone at it or something, enough to make it go WTF and probably run off.

I hope you go out in the wild and attempt to do what you described and enjoy the beatdown the deer will deliver to you. Bambi is not a reliable souce of animal behaviour OK?

That is in my home state of MI.. More deer here than people..
Right call in my opinion..
Deer was hurt, would you rather call some shelter and spend some tax payer dollars to something most people in this state refer to as a forest rat? Or better yet, have some tree hugging hippie hit the thing and then complain about how high the insurance rates are in our state?
Just to give you guys an idea. Farmers in this state can apply for "block" permits for deer. They are considered a damaging species. The guy down the street from me got 160 deer tags this year... They give them out like candy!

Not in MI, All you have to do is call the 50 tell them you hit a deer and your good to go.

Cripes, and some people have to sit in the cold woods for hours until they even get a chance at shooting one.

Thats a bit of a fib if I've ever heard one. I live close enough to see deer on a weekly basis blocking my only way of entrance and exit to my property. I've never once in almost two decades seen a deer do this. I live close to the city and that could change how deers behave versus what was shown in the video, but its pretty obvious that deer was either zoned out from being hit or was begging to be put out of its misery.

That being said, what is it with people getting all outraged over cops shooting a deer? It's pretty hilarious some of the comments in this thread suggesting the cops did anything wrong. In a college class recently we were talking about how out of touch society is with where it gets it's food from and how the food chain actually works. This thread shows how people have no idea how deer populations work if they care about a single deer shot by cops in a urban area. I'd love to see this threads reaction on cops shooting a mountain lion within a mile of a school in my area.

P.S. Cop hatred is pretty funny on this forum, too. Cops are hated because either you earned a ticket, one was being a dick (oh gee, one person being an asshole and you label the entire career as such), or you've in the past done, been doing, or are planning to do something illegal. Why else would you hate cops? It's not like you have to deal with cops on a regular basis if you are a normal law-abiding citizen.

I still at times do low-level "illegal" things and I'd still rather have police than not have police and deal with crazies or high level of crime. Go to a third-world country and see how horrible/no police works out and let me know if you still "hate" cops.
