Quebec provincial police were searching Sunday for two prisoners who escaped from a Saint-Jerome prison in a helicopter.

Police located the helicopter about 85 kilometres away in Mont-Tremblant on Sunday afternoon.

Sgt. Benoit Richard said police received a call from prison staff regarding the dramatic escape around 2:20 p.m. He didn't say if the helicopter had landed on prison grounds and wouldn't provide further details about the getaway.

After authorities found the helicopter, Benoit said the chopper's pilot was taken to an area hospital where he would be questioned by investigators.

Prison breakouts via helicopter aren't anything new. And they are surprisingly successful. The hard part is staying escaped after you get out.

One of the guys I used to hunt with was a sharp shooter at a federal prison in the area. IIRC if someone was fleeing, one warning shot; 2nd shot was to kill. I don't know if he ever had to shoot someone, but in the woods, he never had to fire more than once at a deer. Thus, with firepower ready to take out any escapees, I'd be surprised - at least at his prison - for someone to make such a foolish attempt.

I think dying would probably be preferable to trying to live out the rest of my days in prison. I'd probably ignore the second warning. :)

Would be much more impressive if they'd first smuggled the helicopter into the prison one part at a time.

How many warnings?

lol wow that is one epic escape. Takes balls to try planing something like that out, you can't exactly hide a helicopter.

I know if I was in prison, unless it was a short sentence, I'd be planing my escape every single day and if I get caught, I'd just do it over again. I would rather die than to spend my life in there.

There's one common mistake everyone who escapes does though. They start committing crime right off the bat, and stay in society. If you're going to escape prison you need to completely get out of society and live in the forest for the rest of your life. Not easy to do, but beats being stuck in jail. Still a chance of getting caught as they probably wont give up and they will start combing the entire forest for you, but at least it buys you some time to be free for a bit.

Interesting plan, Red Squirrel. Personally I try to avoid committing crimes, but sometimes the temptation to slice and dice a hooker is just too strong.

Surprised at the warning shot to be quite honest. Reminds me of my one hour layover in Turkey heading to Afghanistan.

Would have been funny if he had been caught at a chip stand stealing a poutine. I can totally see that happen in Quebec too.

Why not let prison guards "fire at will" on any chopper setting down inside a prison, ought to be ale to get off several quality shots at the engine, rotors ect..

Quebec is in a lot of debt, they can only afford to give one magazine per jail. It must be used wisely. :awe:

Easy as it might be to actually perform the escape from the prison, it must really be hard to actually get away with a bloody helicopter. It's not exactly the most inconspicuous vehicle there it. Either you land it not too far away and thus don't have much of a head start over the police, or you land it far away, and risk everyone on the ground telling the police where you went. Anyway they've been caught, which is not surprising at all :p

Fine, empty magazine into chopper's engine bay, your bound to hit something to disable it, a fuel line, a hydraulic line, an electrical connector..

Someday, someone will use a stealth robotic drone with advance AI to do this. Can mount ATS missiles and a rotatable machine gun.

I call it first.
