Isn't that a hell of a pay raise after 5 years? If I get anything like that I'm going to be rolling in dough! 😀

In my home county (highest paid police officers in the country), Nassau County, NY:

Nassau officers with six years seniority earn a base salary of $85,282 annually,[8] not counting benefits, overtime and night differential, which together lift most officers over $100,000 per year.

I wonder if that's a typo, how can their salary increase by $25,480?

And you know damn well on a drug bust the was not $400,000 in cash there as the druggie said, they only found and recorded $100,000 at the crime scene.

Being a cop seems to pay pretty well and it should considering what all they have to deal with day to day for most of them.

Check the Suffolk county numbers. I believe they are at 94k now after 6 years. Either way they are 2 of the best police jobs in the country.

Most people who are police officers in areas that have a lower salary range either use it to boost them into other jobs or quit within the first 5 years.

For example, a lot of people will join up with NYPD, and use that to get them into the FDNY or Nassau/Suffolk county precints where the pay is considerably higher.

Yeah. I'm not sure what Suffolk's numbers are, but they are still both relatively high for police officers. I pulled my info off of Wikipedia.

From Wikipedia:
In 2006, top pay for a Suffolk patrol officer is $97,958 annually, not including overtime, night differential and benefits, compared with $59,588 in New York City.

50k/year to deal with druggies, robbers, rapists, crackwhores, plus a chance of getting injured/die, no thanks.

I'll stick to my desk job.

University of California Cops, start off at 60-70K a year, and they don't deal with any of those things. Crime is very low on these campuses.

60k-70k/yr in Cali is like 40-50k everywhere else, dealing with drunk student parties ain't all that good of a career either.

I'd need at least that to get shot at and put up with all those losers on a daily basis.

RossMan, remember the piece The Oregonian did on Portland police officers and their "unlimited" paid vacations loophole?

My guess is the smarter officers in our city make a LOT more than that after factoring overtime and paid leave.

The Oregonian article applied to the entire police force; I think one of the local news stations did a piece of one of the main abusers, which was an Sheriff.
