POLICE OFFICERS: overtime?

Can you all explain to me what is going on with overtime now if you are on the force?
Is it only for patrol, are corp's no longer eligible? Are desk sgt's getting shafted with covering shifts and no OT? I am in the queue and would like to know b4 having to pay anyone back down the line.

Plz don't hijack this OT thread into PN thread!

Thx

As I understand it (I don't understand it too well, it's very vague terminology) only white-collar workers earning a salary would be ineligible for OT pay. At any rate, it's illegal to require OT I believe, and I'd like to think most places wouldn't ask you to work it, or at least not much of it, if you won't be paid. I doubt any PD would be an exception.

Unfortunately, there was indication that Sgt's would be exempt from OT. They can be forced to work overtime b/c they are required to cover shifts. It's not uncommon for a Sgt to pull 2 (I personally know of 3 consecutive) shifts.... Now if they are exempt from OT, that is 2+ shifts without additional pay......

This is the crux of the matter I need some background on....

I relate to tuff time understanding it as it can get vague - I will probably call HR this week
Thx for post
