Police harassment

I think my friends were harassed by the police and that I should stick up for them and complain, but I wanted the opinions of some of you guys first. Let me all know what you think. I'll try to keep it brief, but I'm pissed so that will be hard.

I have 2 friends, sisters, ages 24 and 26. No records and no problems. They live with their mom in a townhome that has a one car garage. Both have cars so one car has to sit on the street at night.

Last night at 2 am the cops woke them up. The cops were asking about the car on the street and said that the plates on the car were from a stolen car. They asked the girls to go to the station with them.

At the station the cops interviewed them seperately and gave them both a really hard time.
The plates on their car were stolen, but of course the girls didn't put them there. One girl was threatened with getting arrested several times. The cop asked her if she was protecting someone over and over. He even said that if they just needed money and stole the plates to avoid paying for gas they should admit it. If they could admit to that then maybe the other owner would not be so upset. The cops implied that the girls couldn't possibly make enough money to live where they live so they must have resorted to stealing the car and/or the plates.

The cop also asked what would happen if the plates were run for fingerprints. Then he asked the one sister what would happen if they gave her a lie detector test.
They kept asking them who their friends were and who they knew.

The one sister works in financial services, which includes life insurance, and had some paperwork for a life policy of a client in the car. The cop searched the vehicle...without asking... and read the paperwork. He asked the sister who this clent was and what would happen if they called the client and talked to them.
That would potentially damage her business.

This crap went on for several hours. They got home at around 7 am.

What finally got them out of there was that another cop finally checked on the plates that should have been on the girls' car. The plates turned up a few times, but nowhere quite near where they live or drive on a daily basis.

So some theives stole another car, and put those plates in the girls' car, and now the theives are driving around with the stolen car and girls' plates.

I'm pissed. If the cops had done their homework up front they could have figured this out in short order without bringing the girls to the station and harassing them.
They picked on some young girls....who are not white either....and it seems completely out of line. Comon sense would tell anyone they didn't do it.
Why would girls steal a car and put the stolen plates on their personal car? You would have to be a complete retard to do that. Keep in mind the other car was stolen 2 weeks ago.

So, should I complain? If so, to who? I have the feeling that if I talk to more police I will get nowhere. I found the mayor's email fromt the net. How does that sound for a start?

Side note: One little lesson for all of us: check the plates on your car every once in a while.

Just say, " I want a lawyer ". . . best thing to do in this situation. Doesn't help anything now. . .

They didn't notice. Do you always check your plates before you get in your car?

Because people are stupid.

Ask the chick I arrested the other day why she was using a fake ID that said "LEGAL FIRST AMENDMENT NON GOVERNMENT PHOTO ID CARD FOR PERSONAL USE" on the front of it.

Uhh... I don't know about you but if my car had stolen plates on it I would expect the police to ask me what I know about it.

Why even bring this up, unless, of course, you suspect the police officers wouldn't have woken your friends up at 2 AM to question them about stolen plates being on their car if the cops had known they were white?

Comon sense would tell anyone they didn't do it.

What? You mean to imply all car thieves are men who keep to themselves, and never involve their girlfriends or female acquantiences?

Why would girls steal a car and put the stolen plates on their personal car? You would have to be a complete retard to do that. Keep in mind the other car was stolen 2 weeks ago.

Uhhh. the same reason a car thief would steal a car and put the stolen plates on a friends car, or if they were smart, a stranger's car. Criminal are not always smart, though. What' the harm in asking someone how they ended up with plates from a stolen car on their own car? It's a pretty fair question...

So, should I complain?

Why should YOU be the one doing the complaining? Did you suffer by proxy? Were you harmed in any way? Suffering from mental anquish knowing two friends were questioned for hours? Oh, the horror!

If so, to who? I have the feeling that if I talk to more police I will get nowhere.

No, it will get you somewhere--laughed at.

I found the mayor's email fromt the net. How does that sound for a start?

Somehow I suspect the mayor probably doesn't care how the police go about their business as long as they do their job and operate within the law the swore to uphold. Doesn't sound like they violated any law, so I don't see how or why he (or she) would take your complaint seriously--especially given you weren't even involved at all.

Maybe this is just from watching too much TV-but don't they have to charge your friends or let them go if they decide to leave? I mean, if they aren't being held on any charges then they are free to go at ANY time from what I understand.

Wrong things the police did: nothing
Wrong things your friends did: not keep quiet and not get a lawyer immediately.

Even if you did nothing wrong you should never talk to the police. EVER. NEVER EVER EVER WITHOUT AN IMMUNITY.

lol that is not "police harassment" that is standard interrogation.

They asked the girls to go to the station with them.

Sounds to me like they even had the option to refuse in the first place..

If you're stealing plates to steal gas or something, why would you leave them on all the time?

That would scream come catch me if I get pulled over or a cop randomly check my plates!

If you're a cop you should know what I said was true. The police can accidentally get you for something you didn't do.

I disagree with your absolute statement of 'never talk to the police'. If you're suggesting to exercise your rights and not submit to questioning, I have no problem with that. If you're suggesting what you're actually saying, then I do have an issue with your line of thought.

+1.
Make them watch the never talk to the police video.

They will have to arrest me before I go to the police station.

Congratulations! You just gave them probable to cause to actually arrest you.

So instead of a voluntary trip to the police station where you can clear things up (if you really "didn't do it", that is), you get to go riding in the back of the cruiser with cuffs on. Smart!

Which is, of course, why neither of them was arrested!

You fail.

You obviously don't know what you're talking about.

We all know the prisons are chock full of innocent people whose only mistake was talking to the police! Don't believe me? Ask the prisoners-- they'll all tell you they are innocent!

my wife just got a no insurance ticket dropped, had to get the DMV to verify the insurance because the cop claimed the geico issued proof of insurance card looked fake. and the worst part is the lady who was handling the tickets/setting up payment plans said she couldn't verify it by calling the insurance company and that it was OUR responsibility to prove we had insurance, we didnt know what the hell to do, so we called the DMV and they were like what the hell? why didnt she just call and verify the policy... she then verified it and called the court... ticket got dropped.
