Police get the identities of posters on message board.

It's an unusual case I'm sure. In what circumstances have our identities be subpoenaed in the past?

Here's the message board part:

"The Eagle found itself in the middle of the investigation again in April when the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office subpoenaed the identities of six people who had posted items to a BTK bulletin board on the paper's Web site. The Eagle cooperated without a fight, Chisenhall said, but drew criticism from District Attorney Nola Foulston when the paper ran a story about the subpoenas."

in the name of finding a killer i think the people on the bulletinboard may have had info.
so, in the name of justice, i think it was justified.

Firstly, anything we post here is, according to the guidelines, the property of AT (I presume anyway - I've never read them). So, I doubt the police would have to subpoena anything if it was used in assisting a murder investigation.

That said, one should never post anything on AT that they'd be upset to find in court or wherever by whomever. Sure we may all joke about scat and things of that nature, but if you're bragging about illegal activities you've commited on a forum such as this you should expect to get nailed.

SUBPOENA THE POOPIE!

I'm aware of a site where some posters are being sued in Federal court for comments they made about the quality of a company's products. The company may lose the suit, but the people involved will still be out a huge sum to pay lawyers.

Hey, if law enforcement agencies go through the proper channels and get a subpoena or warrant, that's fine.
What's *not* fine is private entities (*cough* RIAA *cough*) demanding that other private entities hand over user information.
What's also *not* fine is law enforcement agencies demanding this information without going through the proper channels.
