In a statement Norfolk Police confirmed they had investigated an offence of unauthorised access to computer data, under the Computer Misuse Act, after being contacted by the football club.

Chris told the BBC he was able to take the images from a section of the site that was being worked on, finding them linked from a file within the website's source code.

Any computer user can view this through their internet browser.

I don't really know what to say? I'm not sure that this even qualifies for a WTF?.

Thankfully, the police, in a very rare show of non-total-idiocy, have suggested a "face-to-face" discussion between the two parties, rather than filing charges immediately against the teen.

Could you have been a little less clear about what actually happened with your linked quote?

Kid visits club's site, viewed source, saw an area of the page under construction (probably commented out), followed/downloaded the linked images in that section. Images were of the club's new kits (uniforms), which they hadn't yet released to the public. Kid tweets the new kits. Club is all pissy about it 'cause their site developers are apparently lazy shits.

That explains it. I was confused too at what actually happened.

I see nothing wrong with what the kid did. The pictures were already on their website, just not as easily accessible, but they were still there. It's not like the server had to be compromised to get to them, they were already in the web accessible folder.

Club phones police, police facepalm and say "WTF, sort it out amongst yourselves".

It's the functional equivalent of discovering the the North Koreans used a generic $15 web template to build their national website.

More like a prominent tech forum accidentally leaaving a hidden moderator forum open, then the taking action against members who disseminated information found in said forum.

Such a thing would not happen in real life, of course :p
