it'll be interesting to see how many people here actually own a gun. if you do own one, what does ur SO think about you owning one? and how do you keep it away from your kids?

I don't have any kids, and my gf doesn't really care right now. Besides, I only have a couple of rifles that haven't been shot in over 4yrs.

I own many rifles and shotguns, and one pistol that my father gave me.

With the exception to the pistol all are used for hunting and are locked in a gun safe in my closet.

As long as they don?t cost $$$ or take up too much of my time she doesn?t care about them.

Own several. She feels safer in our house since she also knows how to use them.

I personally own 6 guns.
My dad owns probably close to 15 or so.

I don't have an SO.
My mom is fine with guns.

I don't have kids.
When I was younger, my dad's guns were either in a safe or gun cabinet. I think he may have kept one in his closet, on the top shelf but I knew enough not to play with it.

My sister's kids are at our house a lot. one is only a few months old so he can't do anything anyway. My niece is almost 2. My dad's guns are always out of reach for her.

My guns are not locked, but they are in drawers that she cannot open (plus right now those drawers are blocked by a computer case that she can't move). I do keep one handgun on my nightstand (mag inserted but no round chambered). I would think it would be near impossible for her to chamber a round herself anyway. She is not allowed in my room unless accompanied by an adult. My door is also always closed and she can't open it yet.

I do have 1 rifle that is not in a case or anything, but it is in its original box (unloaded) and the ammo for it is in the drawers I mentioned above.

That sounds unsafe as hell. Take some responsibility and lock your shit up.

It's perfectly safe to have an unlocked loaded gun on your nightstand?

Having a full mag in the gun does not mean it is loaded. A semi-auto firearm is considered loaded when there is a round in the chamber. I really doubt a 2 year old possesses the understanding, dexterity, or strength to disable the safety and rack the slide on a semi-auto pistol (even if they could get to it which they can't).

Please leave the thread, this is about who owns guns. Don't start another flame war.

I own several guns and have children.
Shotgun is loaded, not chambered and stored in a case in the closet.
Rifle is stored in the garage with 2 mags loaded but not in the gun.
Pistol is loaded and chambered in my bedroom. I keep it on the nightstand when I'm sleeping and when not, it is either on my or on the top shelf of the closet.

My GF doesn't mind that I have the guns, but wants me to get a safe if I get any more guns, which I plan on doing so I have a place to store papers and such too.

I own a CZ52 (soviet era czech pistol) that my wife tolerates but doesn't like. I plan on getting a MN soon as well. No kids. There is now way in h*** that a kid could rack the slide on my pistol, I barely can...

exactly. not to mention that she can't even open the door to my room, would have to find it - it's behind the stack of books on my nightstand, and open the snap on the holster.

i already said its not the ideal situation and i have been looking into some sort of safe or lockable cabinet. for the time being, its safe.

I think another question to ask is: If not, do you plan on owning one? Just my $0.02.

I "own" .20 gauge semi auto shotgun, a bolt action .22 rifle, and a lever action .7mm rifle.

All of these are actually stored 10 miles down the road at my parents house where they have a gunsafe. At some point, I'll purchase a safe of my own and move them back over here. I'm in no rush do so though.

At some point I'll likely pick up .40 or .45 handgun to keep in a small safe in the bedroom, but again, no rush.

My wife grew up with guns in the house her entire life but she doesn't feel comfortable with them in her own home. Kids will be in the future very shortly and she is even more paranoid about guns in the home than ever before.

She's certainly not happy about having firearms in the home, but if they are locked up properly she'll accept that as a compromise.

I have several. No hand guns though, just rifles and shotguns.

*edit - My kid is only 11 months old. I'll probably move the guns downstairs and into a locked gun cabinet. Also, I'll be sure to teach him about guns when he's older. I'm looking forward to him being old enough to come to the range with me.

As to the OP:

Yes, I own guns (currently about 80).
Only a couple of them are with me at my current residence due to city restrictions.

My SO doesn't like guns but seems ok with me having them. No children visit so they are not locked up but are out of sight.

where did you find your source? i'm just curious because i had a hard time finding a reliable source and a current source.

i'm surprised i didn't think of it until now, i should have checked the NRA site.
