POLE: Mazda 3 GT or Civic Si

Scouzer

Lifer
Mazda 3 GT (I don't know what this trim is called in the US...its everything except for GFX and Leather) - $24,869 or $27,320 with leather and GFX
Civic Si - $29,130

These are MSRP out the door prices in CDN dollars. What would you buy? I'm not buying now, just wanted to see everyones opinion.

And yes I saw the Edmunds comparison I don't feel that accurately compares the top models of these.

I like the 3 5-door design as its really practical but the SI sedan is also very sweet looking, minus the riceboy wing of course.

Hard to decide as the 2.3L has a lot more TQ than the SI motor and the SI insurance price will anally rape you.

3S 5-dr wins out!

Definately consider insurance rates. I remember comparing last year's SiR vs the Mazda3 GT and the Mazda was significantly lower.

Heh I didn't see CDN dollars so I was like WTF 30k for a Civic Si!
If you like the looks of the new Civic Si I would go for that.
I haven't driven any of these cars before, but the Civic Si looks a lot more fun to drive. I personally wouldn't choose a FWD car for personal satifaction/fun.

depends on how yuo drive. THe mazda 3 gt has more torque for regualr street driving, but if you plan to bust out at 8k on a regualr basis, the higher hp of the si helps.

SI, my dad has had both 2004 and 2006, also the Mazda 3 GT he like the 2006 si better than all

here ranked them as so:

si 2004: 7/10
Si 2006 :8.5/10
3 GT: 4.5/10

mazda 3 comes in the i, s, s touring and s grand touring.

grand touring is the fully loaded with leather

test drive them both. thats what i did. and i ended up with a 3s gt 🙂

Why the Civic SI vs the Acura RSX Type S? Seems like they'd be in the same price range... and resale I'd think would be higher on the Acura? [edit]Nevermind, Type S is about $5K more in US Dollars, didn't catch that the above was in Canada $... thought $29K seemed high for a civic. 😛 [/edit]

My 04 Spec V FTW. 😀 Just wanted to plug that. You can get a brand new one for 17-18k (175hp/180lb at 4000rpm). Me Likey

::Edit:: I'm assuming the 3GT is still 160HP. Isn't the 06 SI somewhere in the range of 197hp?

Too bad the Spec V is built on an ancient platform. I'm sure the other two would eat it alive handling wise; certainly the Si anyway.

Excactly. The Spec-V is old bones junk now. The interior is horrendous, it looks ugly, the platform (as said) is old as dirt and the MZ3 and Si would surely outhandle it

Wow.. that's harsh. Well I've driven in the 3s and the Spec V. The 3 interior LOOKS nicer but the spec V is still damn comfortable. The seats are perfect for me. I've driven for long periods without feeling any kind of strain. Handling-wise... I've driven my Spec V around many a corner at high speeds and there's been no slipping and little body roll. Mazda 3 is a tad stiffer but I don't believe it's anything that'll be a deciding factor in a race. Last but not least, the Spec V would def leave the other two (assuming this is the old Civic Si not the new platform) in the dust as far as straightline shots.

Now I'm not saying i'm a pro driver (or even an amateur racer) by any means but, given that i've actually driven both cars and pushed them on windy roads I feel I need to throw my opinion in there. Regardless of what you think of looks, the specV def has them beat in performance.

P.S. I'd also like to see the Mazda 3 come STOCK with Brembos and a low flow exhaust (sounds purty). Hey.. I love my car so i'll sing its praises as much as I can. 😀

P.P.S. Sorry to hijack the thread. 🙁

This about the '06 Si😉

The '06 Si would kill both the 3s and the Nissan.

Umm, no 😀

But yeah, I'd place all bets on the Si as far performance goes...that is until the 274HP Mazda3 MPS gets here 😀

I absolutely agree with you... just wanted to point out that I made the comparison based on the old Si platform. The new Si is essentially like an 00-03 RSX-S isn't it? I chose my Spec V based on bang for the buck AND I can't really afford 22k for a vehicle especially since i'm looking on getting an apt too. However... I'm gonna try and save up some cash... get a new header, new exhaust, new CAI and maybe mine'll be able to compete with the 06 si 😀... a man can dream.
