POLE: Dream Theater vs Tool

Although DT has been around longer and they certainly have more albums than Tool I think its an interesting comparison especially considering the impact both bands have.

So who's your favorite?

Which would you consider their best songs to be?

Tool's one of my favorite bands, no contest. I've heard a lot of good things about DT, but have never really gotten around to listening to them. Any fans suggest an album to get into them?

Images and Words.

Dream Theater BY FAR

Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From A Memory, 'nuf said.

Tool's songs are long and drawn out, but not complex by any means. Dream Theater's songs are long, but have much more substance IMO.

And Tool Guitar Solos versus Dream Theater Guitar Solos? No contest. (doesn't Tool even have solos?).

I have to be in the right mood for DT, I have a couple of their albums and they're pretty good but they're not heavy enough for me

Have you listened to "Train of Thought" ? More modern and heavier than earlier Dream Theater.

Petrucci is easily one of the top 5 rock guitarists of all time.

I don't really see the comparison...the musical styles are completely different. I like Tool a lot better though because I like that style of music better anyway, and MJK's voice is a lot easier to listen to.

Tool's music is far more complex both musically and with its message than you're giving it credit for.

No way Dream Theater will win this poll. Tool is way too popular with the "I hate the world" crowd.

And haven't they both been around since the early '90s?

Ignorance is bliss 🙂 And yes, early '90s on both bands.

Is it bad that i've never heard of Dream Theater?

If any of your friends are guitar nuts, ask them.

Or drum nuts, or keyboard nuts...

Yeah, that too. 🙂

I think a really really high percentage of DTs fans are musicians, moreso than any band I can think of. Maybe Rush comes close.

Mentioning Rush and Dream Theater in the same sentence... the world is truly doomed. 🙁

Right now my fav DTsong is Beyond This Life, it changes from time to time.
I have not been able to get into Tool's music 😕

I'm not really a Tool fan, but I'm a Dream Theater fan, so you know where my vote goes ...

Dream Theater music is fairly complex considering the timing changes, the complexity/difficulty of playing the actual music ... I dunno, I'm not a musician by trade so I don't know what goes into putting the music together. But I love the resulting sound that comes out. Being a metal fan (old metal, like Metallica, Megadeth, Flotsam and Jetsam, etc), a lot of the songs have the same edge that metal has but its got a different sound to it that I love.

If you haven't heard anything by DT before definitely give them a listen. The first album I bought was Metropolis Pt. 2 - Scenes from a Memory. Every song is related and the entire album tells a story which is kind of interesting. Train of Thought, their latest studio album is also really good.

Their styles are completely different, you cannot compare these two bands.

they're both prog rock

Britney Spears and Beatie Boys are both Pop/Rock, what's your point?

QFT.

And to anyone wanting to check out DT for the first time I suggest Change of Seasons.
