My friends little brother brought up this arguement last time, that the polar bear is twice the size of a grizzly bear. Me not knowing next to nothing regarding bears said that is probably not true. I said I highly doubt polar bears are twice as big as grizzly bears, and said that, despite the polar bear being the largest land meat eating animal, I am pretty sure that grizzly bears are comparable in size, and would put up a good fight if they were to face off with one another.

This kid is calling me an idiot saying I have no clue what I am talking about, but who is the bigger idiot? Someone who thinks Grizzly bears are of comparable size to polar bears (300 pounds off around)? Or someone who tells me polar bears are twice the size of grizzly bears on average?

Male grizzly bears can range from weights of 180 to 680 kilograms (400?1,200 pounds) and stand 2.44 m (8 ft) tall on their hind leg

the polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is a bear native to the Arctic Ocean and its surrounding seas. The world's largest predator found on land, an adult male weighs around 300?600 kg (660?1320 lb),

Therefore, it would appear as though they are fairly comparable.

A fully grown grizzly is almost as big as a Polar bear. The grizzly bear will have larger claws and is built for confrontation. The Polar Bears usually are fighting aquatic animals such as seals and walrus...

The grizzly also has less of a neck and a much better fighting stance as it often gets up on 2 legs. The polar bears are more rigged for swimming....

The real question is why would these two bears ever fight? Both would lose interest unless food and/or cubs were involved. In that case a mama or two would be involved and it'd be hard to say who would win.

Polar bears are larger, but not twice as large, unless you do something stupid and compare an adult polar bear to a grizzly cub or something.

They're also somewhat compatible. I've read that they've been known to rarely mate when the Polar Bears travel across the ice to Canada in the summer for food.

Um, the kodiak why was it not considered.

Can range from 1,200 ? 1,500 lbs. and up to 11ft. tall.

Those are big ones but still. I think Kodiak FTW

Would they be freakishly massive like Ligers?

Yup I told him about the Kodiak also the same day even though I was unsure. Anyways he is a stubborn/aggressive/arguementative 18 year old with his sources all net based. He is still under the arguement that they are twice as big. It's alright :)

Anytime that you argue with someone like that you are bound to lose.
Never argue with an idiot.

So I gotta ask, if it turns out you are right (or in this case, the less idiotic of the two), are you going to feel better about yourself that you made this thread and are "right"? Will you go to your friend's little brother and rub it in his face that some people on the internet said you were right? LOL give me a fscking break.

Conclusion, you're just as much as an idiot as the little kid for even getting into an argument with him.

So here are the facts:

A) OP got into an argument with a friend's little brother
B) OP came here to ask about it instead of using google
C) OP calls the other person in the argument "stubborn/aggressive/arguementative 18 year old with his sources all net based" despite B and A

Further the Kodiak Brown bear is in fact a type of Grizzly so your friend is incorrect.

Its still a retarded thing to argue about though.

The difference between a kodiak and a grizzly, is kodiaks spend most of their time near the coast, grizzlys spend most of their time up in mountains. They are, as Captante pointed out, the same type of bear.

Back to topic. While grizzlys have much larger claws, and heavier muscle in the limbs, Polar bears are much more agressive. The most likely outcome of a confrontation between the two is the grizzly would flee, upon seeing the polar bear aggressively approaching, before the polar bear got within striking distance.

Grizzlys/kodiaks and polar bears are known to mate and produce offspring from time to time.
