Senior politicians from Poland’s ruling Law and Justice party (PiS) have distanced themselves from a controversial proposal to ban abortion, in the wake of a wave of mass protests across Poland that appears to have caught the government off guard.

Jarosław Gowin, the minister of science and higher education, said on Wednesday that the protests had “caused us to think and taught us humility”.

Tens of thousands of people boycotted work and classes on Monday to protest against the proposals, which if enacted would impose a blanket ban on abortion, including in instances of pregnancy as a result of rape or incest.

Despite wretched weather, approximately 30,000 people, many dressed in black, had gathered in Warsaw’s Castle Square, chanting “We want doctors, not missionaries!” and carrying placards bearing messages like “My Uterus, My Opinion”, and “Women Just Want to Have FUN-damental Rights”.

I'm surprised that they are that out of touch to what the majority want, it was a hardline group's petition to try and ban all abortion, and it's failing spectacularly, it's pissed people off so much that they have over 500,000 signatures seeking abortion to be legalized (the anti-abortion got 100,000 signatures).

Sorry, but abortion in Poland is widely and popularly opposed.

Nope.

"Most Poles accept abortion in cases when it is legal under current law. The support for abortion rights when mother's life is in danger is almost universal (87%). Over three-quarters of respondents think that it should be available for women whose pregnancy threatens their health (78%), or was caused by rape or incest (78%). Three-fifths (60%) support the right to abortion if it is known that the child would be handicapped."

There is definitely a lot more support for it now than there was before they attempted to ram this idiotic law through, i agree with your statement though that it isn't going to change much.

Uh, yep.

A CBOS poll from 2013 found that 75% of Poles think abortion is "always wrong and can never be justified". Only 7% thought there was "nothing wrong with it and could always be justified".[18]

A CBOS poll from February 2014 found that a majority (65%) found abortion morally inappropriate and only 27% found it appropriate, a drop of 4% in comparison to a 2009 poll.[14]

A CBOS poll from November 2014 found that a majority (55%) of Poles oppose abortion on request, with only 37% supporting it. Furthermore, 71% of Poles believe that abortion on request is inappropriate, with 20% thinking it is appropriate.[15]

Wow, what made the opposition to abortion drop for 75% to 55% in less than 2 years? Could it be right wing mostly male politicians trying to force the issue?

I don't know, but the abortion ban bill has been tried multiple times since 2011. After which the right-wing, mostly male politicians were voted into office, and into being the major party in parliament.

One would think this was a majority Catholic country or something.

<sigh> And yet, those same Poles:

"Most Poles accept abortion in cases when it is legal under current law. The support for abortion rights when mother's life is in danger is almost universal (87%). Over three-quarters of respondents think that it should be available for women whose pregnancy threatens their health (78%), or was caused by rape or incest (78%). btw, there have been questions re the reliability of CBOS.

HEY PEOPLE...
Why do you think our republicans want so desperately to take over the full Supreme Court Of The United States?
So much so that they would get behind any idiot running for the presidency of the United States?
Including, even Donald Trump.
It's all about the court.
Because even if republicans own all three branches of government, and also ban abortion, republicans know that eventually this will end up in the hands of the US Supreme Court.

Ps. And it won't matter one bit what the majority of people think or polls show.
If given the change, and enabled by a extreme right wing US Supreme Court, a republican congress and president WILL ABSOLUTELY DO THIS TOO.

So why are they running away from this bill now?

Poland's parliament has voted overwhelmingly to reject a controversial citizens' bill for a near-total ban on abortion.
Maybe they know their politics better than you?

Maybe Poland should be concerned about what happened in Romania wrg to Nicolae Ceausescu to better inform themselves of the generational response that they would be facing in a reality where they successfully ban abortion.
