Poland ready to help rebuild Notre Dame Cathedral after fire: PM

My son in law owns a mideval castle in Poland and when he bought the castle it was with the agreement that any work done on the castle had to be done in the manner it was built originally and any bricks all had to be made in the exact same way they were made when the castle was built!! -- So YES the Poles are well qualified to assist as well as other countries in Europe!!

Referring to the ancient building, which was partly destroyed by a massive fire that erupted just before 7 pm on Monday, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said at a news conference in Warsaw: "It's our European, Christian heritage; these are the foundations of Europe."

He added that Poland was ready to help reconstruct the cathedral, “but everything depends on the French authorities.”

Polish President Andrzej Duda said in a Twitter post on Monday that the devastating fire at the famous cathedral in the heart of Paris was "a tragedy for religious people and a disaster for world culture."

Duda was writing as Notre Dame, one of the world's most iconic churches, erupted in flames and was being gutted by fire in the French capital on Monday evening.

The blaze engulfed the entire roof of the 856-year-old cathedral and spread to its wooden interior and one of the towers before it was put out by firefighters in the early hours of Tuesday. The cathedral’s 93-metre spire, one of the landmarks of Paris, collapsed after it was consumed by the flames.

Poland's Culture Minister Piotr Gliński was quoted as saying on Tuesday that Poland could support France in rebuilding Notre Dame not only financially, but also with the work of its heritage conservation professionals.

"Apart from funds, we above all have the know-how and great traditions in terms of what is known as the school of Polish conservation, and we are now able to offer such assistance to France," he said.

Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Konrad Szymański told public broadcaster Polish Radio on Tuesday morning that Europeans should pool efforts to rebuild the Paris cathedral as a gesture of solidarity.

"The cathedral has demonstrated that it is a spiritual centre of Europe," said Szymański, who is Poland's deputy foreign minister in charge of European affairs.

Meanwhile, the Polish president's chief of staff, Krzysztof Szczerski, said on Tuesday that a copy of an iconic Polish Black Madonna painting—known as the image of Our Lady of Częstochowa—and relics of St. John Paul II—the Polish-born pope who was declared a saint by the Roman Catholic Church in 2014—have been spared in the fire in Paris.

The Polish items were placed at Notre Dame Cathedral in December, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

I'm very suspicious. The Current Polish government is quite anti-democratic and also very close to the clergy. Perhaps this is more a religious statement than anything else?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Talk of "European, Christian heritage" has a particular implication in the current climate. I don't trust them at all.

Neither do I but ill take what I can get.
I actually talk with a few natives there, they are hell bent on taking power back next elections..

My impression of Polish politics is based entirely of random bits from the news that stuck in my mind over the years, so its very hard to know what to make of anything.

Googling to try and get up to speed, leaves me none-the-wiser. Yet again it strikes me that people are formed by their very different experiences and contexts, that eveyrone has a view of the world that fits their particular situation, and that it's amazing that anyone can ever get on with anyone else at all.

Gliński was a vegetarian for almost 20 years, but had to stop for health reasons, he said. Still, he defended Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski’s “cyclists and vegetarians” quote, suggesting the minister was making a point about a certain type of Western lifestyle.

Gliński recalled how, visiting relatives in Cologne, he saw “thousands of participants of this culture.” There were bikes and people “drinking lattes,” completely unflustered by the conflict raging in Ukraine. “We couldn’t understand why this Europe is so indifferent,” he said.

“I consider this culture of cyclists and vegetarians egoistic,” he said. “The duty of these people, if they feel European, would be to do anything to end that war and stop those people from dying.”

Of course this is a religious monument and of course Poland is one of the few nations in Europe where the churches are full every week!
But why try to make this into a political issue?
Anybody in power in Poland, as well as most European nations is going to jump at the chance to offer assistance to rebuild Notre dame! It`s a no brain winner!!

The placement of the art works in Notre Dame evidences the link between the French and Polish. Of course, many Russians have relocated in France as well. But the link of religious history, the parallel experiences with the Nazis play into it.

My silly theory is that Steve Bannon set the fire. Both he and Trump and been harassing Pope Francis, who has put a special spotlight of charity on poor non-white peoples. They don't like that, so using priest-pedophilia and chances of church bankruptcy as an excuse, they'd instigated a campaign.

Burning Notre Dame gives them a double-whammy. Trump gets even with Macron and drops a profound tragedy in the Pope's lap.

I don't really believe that, but heck -- who knows?
