Basically no part of Europe had any tradition of democracy such as we know it today in the days before the Russian revolution. Some countries had parliaments, but they also had kings with formal power, and in my country for example women lacked the right to vote.

What I meant though wasn't looking back at the pre-Soviet era (which only a tiny fraction of society can still do today, you'd have to be well over 100 years old to have any genuine memories from that period), but looking back with nostalgia at the actual Soviet era. It sounds crazy, but some people actually do that. It's the good ole "the devil you know" factor, plus, like I said, rose-colored glasses. The past tends to seem brighter and better once you've put some distance to it. I know; I feel the same way myself about the '70s and '80s. :)

From some Warsaw Pact Nation Immigrants I have conversed with, the few that do have nostalgia for it do so based upon how well/bad things have become Economically. No matter how Politically harsh a Government may be, as long as it meets the basic Needs people have, it will have some support.

Minorities: racial, ethnic, class, religious, linguistic or gender and sexual.
Who's left? By that definition I don't know anyone that isn't a minority, I'm a minority. I don't know one single person that doesn't fit comfortably into one of those category's. Apparently, I have a very diverse group of friends.

Their is not a face palm big enough to explain your lack of intelligence in this thread. Are you trying to make a point it’s ok to discriminate against minorities?

Again we are talking about basic human rights.

Yeah, your neighbours may have spied on you and unmarked cars could have taken you away to be interrogated, disappeared and/or shot at any time, but at least you were guaranteed a roof over your head and a basic income. Under capitalist austerity you're guaranteed fuckall, or well, you're guaranteed to die cold, hungry and alone in a ditch somewhere if you don't have any money, so naturally some people will argue the former was overall better than the latter...

I think he's trying to claim that everybody's a minority, so therefore nobody's really a minority and therefore all the same and on an equal footing.

...Which would be just mindblowingly stupid and obtuse at the same time. But that's RWNJ-ery for ya; there's no IQ low bar you have to pass in order to gain entry, rather it helps if one is both immensely moronic and totally lacking in intellectual honesty.

Exactly right, basically everyone has some attribute of themselves that doesn’t fit into what the majority of people are/think/whatever.

I would think this would provide abundant evidence as to why protecting the rights of a minority are important.

Sarcasm? If so, they do though. Any Government always has some Support. Regardless how harsh they may be. Not everyone feels oppressed in an oppressive system, some are the Oppressors, but others are true believers in the System itself. It's just like how there are Americans who absolutely love that Trump has begun this campaign of Unidentified "Police" grabbing people off the streets, while others see it as a threat to the very foundation of the Nation itself.

It just never occurred to me that minority's included pretty much everyone. I was taught that minorities generally referred to racial and ethnic distinctions. It looks like were at the point where point where the majority are minority's.

At the risk of just being another one piling on....

Yes. You are correct, most people do belong to a Minority of some type. Which is why allowing the Discrimination against 1 Minority is a threat to almost Everyone. Hence the poem:

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me
Martin Niemöller

It is also why the concept of Intersectionality exists.

Sad that they might return to the days when they had the largest Jewish ghetto in Europe.

This should surprise nobody! I have a lived in Poland. The people they are very anti-gay and very racist! You would think after what happened in ww2 they would not be that way! But the truth is there are hardly any people of color in all of Poland! last time I checked 96% of all people in Poland identified as being white!

You forgot political. You know how liberals control the media and are waging a war on Christmas? How it's important for Republicans to cheat every way they can to maintain control to prevent mob rule to the point that they enjoy minority rule?
