maybe the mods could give him a time-limited *guest pass* on slow days :p

20 minutes once-a-week sounds alright

:D

btw, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. arrives on March 22nd

lol
The minute I saw this thread I thought of Rollo.

And hurray about STALKER.

don't you guys ... like

...

play video games .... or something? :p

... or check out SW/Games ... there ARE new demos ... GREAT bargain-bin games
[PREY/Fable/Q4/DM M&M/Tron2.0 ... games you never played ...
heck, i traded Red Faction for Bloodlines ... should be arriving this week]

howz that petition going?

reminds me ... i am the *good hero* in Fable LC ... much work to be done :D

Aloha

Played all of the above barring Tron (didn't like it first time round).

As for Bloodlines, make sure you get the latest community patch as they fix a lot of bugs in the game (yea, joe public made better patches for it).

On the rumour side... Since nVidia is trying to get more games playable on the Mac perhaps they're going to put a lot of those 80nm G80's into Macs in the near future...

Just imagine the driver mess that will be, lol.

Sadly, no.

It's called UT3 now btw.

And ETA is "second half of 2007" now :frown:

I pretty much had a fit when their Jan. 25th "surprise announcement" was that the game was coming out for the 360, was renamed UT3, & was due sometime summer or later :|

/wants UT3 last year already...

Yeah; i'm kind of disappointed with the lack of threads the past few weeks... we just need something huge to happen; some big news; etc.
The R600 rumor mill has been *very* quiet compared to previous launches. It kinda reminds me of the R9700 launch.

The trouble with R600 is that it's *late* and probably won't beat G80 by much at all.

On the contrary! The most probable reason R600 is so late is because they wouldn't release it until it was just a scooch faster than G80. Maybe they had to go 512-bit memory bus because it has only 64 shaders? It just may have sky high clocks with no overclocking room. I'm thinking you can only compensate so much with memory bandwidth before the diminishing returns. So I thoroughly believe R600 will compete nicely with G80 and of course exceed it in certain areas. ATI has had paaaaalunty of time to insure this.

/gersson's rumour request. ;)
It's anyone's guess at the moment.

The early rumors called the performace of R600 "disappointing" and "barely better" than G80. That was in late 2006. The more recent rumors were that ATI's AIB partners were quite pleased with the R600 performance. Perhaps they tweaked it up a bit. My guess is that it will be 20% faster overall. To me that's disappointing considering that the G80 came out 6 months sooner, pretty much a full generation.

With AMD/ATI both playing catchup (slowly and uneffectively thus far), I'm actually worried about the company! Their stock is at a 52 week low.

Also keep in mind that the G80 refresh should be ready to go by the time the R600 launches. It doesn't look good for ATI at the moment. G80 is too incredible.

Thats not a time to worry thats a time to buy! Course I'd wait till a week before Agena comes out. Should be about $3 by then.

I very much enjoyed Tron, but that was a while ago. What is needed is some very good games.... hard to get too excited about new cards when current midrange runs almost every game nicely. A nice new benchmark would also create some excitement with the racing crowd. Means little to me at this time if the r600 is 50% faster in some games at some high resolution. When the 6800ultra came out - it made existing games playable, so created much more buzz than the 8800gtx.

"Budget" and "Xfire"? I think that's what they call "dichotomy" ;)

Have a look at jonnyGURU's site, maybe the info there can help you hit a sweet spot.

I haven't really played anything for the last couple days... been foruming, scouring the 'net for any new kernels of info on the new NEC 2690... which I bought :Q

Should be here next week, it's on a truck somehere between Columbus and Cleveland.

Knowing that something's in the pipe that's going to make everything look 1000% better makes you not want to bother doing much of anything while you're stuck in Crap-O-Vision :D

Oxymoron too. So what did you find trolling for 2690 info? Hook em up - I'd be most interested to read peoples experiances. Oh and I'll have my wife ship out the colorimeter to you - I am leaving town tomorrow for three weeks so obviously I won't be in town to recieve and ship it to you. Hope your expectations are fullfilled - (1000%!!) I'm concerned you may be setting yourself up for a pretty big fall if it isnt abolutly perfect.:p

I haven't found much out about its prowess in fast moving images but then again video/animation work is one of the target professions for the unit. I can only identify 2 ppl that have it on their desk and are posting on the 'net, both imaging folks but both sounding very satisfied. I'm more concerned about any negative reports re: its pixel pitch (screendoor) than its response time but I haven't seen a complaint - this is something I'd imagine an imaging pro would be carping about.

Lemme go link digging for a sec...

Here is the main 2690 thread over @ HardForum

Here is a mini-review from the imaging guy @ HardForum who did the PixPerAn tests for them

Here is a thread on a photography forum from another feller who has it.

It ain't much but all positive so far :) Yeah I hope I haven't done something rash here. I can still return it unopened if I get wind of a deal breaker in the next few days. One of the mods over at WSGF bought one too and I'm eagerly awaiting a report from him.

Yeah Pixel pitch is the deal breaker for me same pitch as a 19" LCD which I find grainy. But I have a little better than 20/15 so ymmv. Are you as old as that 55 year old gentleman? Maybe no problem then.:p

He got banned?! Geez... it finally occurred. In his final topic, I really thought he was beginning to have some LOGIC and THINK THROUGH PROBLEMS but then he proved me wrong once again. What a fool...

don't get too excited ... it's 2 weeks *vacation* ...

and it's about halfway ... i think :p

... and if you look very carefully ... he began to think logically because he was desperate and on the verge of being banned for quite a few posts after the mod warning. ;)

IF he can settle down and respect forum limits and its tolerance, he could be a useful contributer here

I wouldn't count on that...notice how the new user "Techboi" stopped posting after he was called out and reported to the mods.....he was really Akshayt ;)

I don't think we'll be seeing Akshayt for quite some time....he's sharing the same cabin as Rollo on the SS Garbage Scow..

Not quite as old (38) but that's old enough to know that the orbs ain't getting any younger... this PVA is definitely giving me eye fatigue after a little while sitting in front of it. My eyes try to compensate for the shift and things get blurry as if I have some kind of mucusy film over my corneas. If I keep the 2690 as long as I held on to my CRT I'll be 45-46 before I'm done with it :) I'm only one of 2 in my immediate family who doesn't need corrective lenses (yet). So the larger pixel pitch may prove to be of value in the long haul. I'll be sure to report on what I think of it in the here and now.

Haha. Really outside of the viral marketing aspect, he was a really personable guy and would always help if he could. (I only know this through limited PM's)

Stalker looks good!

-Kevin

hell i spoke with him through PM's and on messenger too, i knew what he was doing , though i wasnt quite sure why, he just liked to see people get riled up over the trivial matter of video cards, people kept responding so he carried on. off the forums he was a pretty sound guy.

from what i gather i dont think he was overly bothered about being here or not, seemed like a successful guy, if he didnt get free swag off AEG/NV i doubt he would of had trouble buying them instead. havent noticed him online since he got banned actually so i guess he's just out enjoying life instead.

2 weeks? i thought a month was standard issue now.

i got a month for something totally trivial in OT, then got another month added for using a 2nd account (i know i shouldnt have, but there was something i needed answering quick-style) got unbanned on the 1st of feb.

ANYway ... saw this and didn't know where to post it

PCI Sig approves external cabling spec 1.0

External graphics cards become a possibility

The standards body now allows for PCIe signaling at x1, x4, x8 and even x16 to be transported via a cable no longer than 10 meters. This also kills a bunch of bandwidth bottleneck and signalling problems which kept graphics manufacturers away from playing with the idea of external graphics cards. Remember, when you're ouside a standardised box, you can do whatever you want - no thermals to be careful of.

Sadly, the PCI-SIG is still maintaining itd attitude that it's not allowing specifications for public download, so we got in touch with Molex and got some preliminary details about the cables, which are already in production. In order to sustain the quality of signaling, a 38, 68 and 136-pin layout is required, depending on the supported speed. In first picture, you can see how the connectors look: ...

I'm not sure if that'd really be worthwhile for desktop systems at all. Maybe for laptops.

I figure it might be for laptops but it might help with quad crossfire

i think it's pretty cool that you can have an external *brick* for the GPU processing ... notebook or desktop

your case can be as cool as you want it
