In a tournament where top 3 players are paid out, with 5 people at the table, let's say that 4 people go all in.

One of those 4 wins, and the other three lose. There were 3 side pots because of different bets.

Who is awarded third place? The person with the second best hand or the person who put in the most money covering all the side pots?

We had 3 side pots just for the record.

Whoever had the higher chip count finishes higher. So, assuming that those 3 players who lost the hand lost all their chips on that hand, whoever had the most chips out of the three should have finished 3rd.

So... with first and second place still playing... and all 3 going out on the same hand....wouldn't they split the 3rd place winnings?

Or what poopaskoopa said. :p

We didn't all have the same hands, we had different hands.

Order of players by money:
2
3
4

Order of players by cards:
3
2
4

Player 2 put in the most money, but had the second best hand. Player 3 put in money for the main and side pot (second most money between 2 3 and 4), and got the best hand. The 4th player had the least money in (just for the main pot) and the worst hand.

Perhaps when we play... we just simplify it too much. We just look at it as all three went out at the same time... doesn't matter what you had...you lost and are out.

All 3 lost out to a better hand.. so all had losing hands.

But that's just the way we play... cause all "losers" have 0 chips. :)

The chip count before the start of the hand decide the payout.

And if the differences in payout between the places are big enough, this might be a time to fold your aces if you are the 4th caller.

Yup, I believe highest chip count wins (or in this case gets third), not the next highest hand for that round.

If you played that way, it would be splitting 3,4, and 5 place winnings.

True... however, since there was no 4th and 5th place winnings they split the 3 place winnings only. :)

Having talked with several of my friends today I'll have to agree with the highest chip count as an "official" ruling (note none of my friends are professionals... that was just the conclusion they came to.)
