Poker chips

I'm planning on buying my parents a set of poker chips for Christmas. We'll usually play poker as a family activity, sometimes with as many as 8 people at the table. How many chips should I be looking to buy?

A 1000 chip set would do you well. You could squeak by with a 500 chip set, but it's no fun being limited like that. 😉

My friends and I play games with as many as 10-11 people.... we have a 600 chip set.... it works fine
It all depends on the denominations, since a small # of high denom. chips can cover a lot of small denom. chips

Just FYI, I saw a set on surpluscomputers.com for $50. don't even know if that's a good price or not, but thougt i'd mention it.

i play with 500 chips for 16 people it is plenty if you have 5 denominations

150 white 150 red 100 blue 50 green 50 black

white = 1
red = 5
blue 10
green = 50
black = 100

10 w
10 r
10 b

160 chips to start out each is fine
because by the end you are going to be cashing out all your chips for black

dont use any black when you start out then you will be fine

i was playign this weekend with 8 people, and we were using 500 chips which was enough for us to each have $40 in chips.

it went like this.

$1 chips - 8/piece
$2 chips - 5/piece
$4 chips - 3/piece
$10 chip - 1/piece

i think thats how we did it, we were just diong quick little tournaments. and we had PLENTY of chips left over heh. it was alot of fun.

He may want some higher quality clay chips. They definately feel nicer/more substantial and sound a lot better clinking together as you rake in your winnings...

if you don't mind changing out chips often (I'm short on the low denomination, let me switch out for higher denomination), then a lower number of chips is fine.

Wow, I had no idea... I was guessing 500-650.

That's plenty. 500 chips for 8 players is over 60 chips per person. Go 200 for the lowest denomination, 200 for the middle and 100 for the top and you'll be set.

Don't know how many you chips you would need total, but here is a sight if you want to have fun with the ones you pick up.

Yeah, I have similar problems. Don't give up, you'll get them. :laugh:

You don't need 1000 in my opinion. I usually play with 4 people and we split 240 chips, 60 chips of 4 colors. If we get 6-7 we split up 360. I'd say 500 would be plenty. I prefer 4 colors, 1s, 5s, 10s, 25s.

I guess it depends on your betting style, your time frame for finishing a game, and what type of game you are playing. We usually play no limit poker tournament style.
