Aichi man dies after dining on deadly 'fugu' puffer fish

HAZU, Aichi -- A 51-year-old man died of poisoning after dining on a poisonous puffer fish, Aichi prefectural health officials said.

Officials from the prefectural government's environmental health division said the man, a resident of Hazu, died after eating a puffer fish that he had prepared by himself at his home. He is reportedly the second person this year to die from puffer-fish poisoning, and the first in Aichi Prefecture in eight years.

The man prepared the puffer fish on Saturday after receiving it from a friend, according to a local public health center. Between about 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Sunday, the man ate sashimi from the liver of the fish. At about 11:30 p.m. that evening, he started showing signs of poisoning, and he died in the predawn hours of Monday.

The man had prepared puffer fish in the past, and his family did not stop him from eating it, officials said. (Mainichi)

So Dr. Hibbert was correct, you WILL die in the early morning from eating fugu.

Read more carefully; he prepared it himself. He obviously wasn't trained as a fugu chef, so in essence, DARWIN FOR THE WIN.

I ate it. It was a business trip to Japan and all the food was ordered by the Japaneese company. They placed a dish down with one large bite for everyone at the table (a round 1" thick steak with bones in a pattern so that there were four pieces). No one touched it so I took a bite. It was the best fish I've ever eaten (only fish I've ever liked the taste of). I mentioned how good it was (compared to the normal horrible Japaneese food), and they all encouraged me to eat the whole dish myself. Then I asked what it was. They said blowfish. I thought a while and wasn't certain. Someone else said puffer fish. That's when I thought I had seen a news show about it. I had to email my family as soon as possible for confirmation.

I would recommend it to others based on taste, but I think it is stupid to order it based on health.

Very good to eat, once in a while, and only when prepared well. I feel sorry for the guy though. Some Japanese people can prepare it well, but someitmes you just get unlucky.

A quote pulled out of someone's sig seems fitting here:

Sheepathon - "omg there's a moray eel trying to eat a pufferfish but the puffer got all huge and the moray is like f u and the puffer is like no, f u and swims away and the moray is like goddamit."

Thats what I've heard about fugu also. Quite the opposite from kujira, which is dark red and quite bloody. But for that price, just give me the best cuts of tuna in the house!

The Puffer Fish, if made correctly, has some poison left in it which makes your lips go numb. The Poison acts very fast and you're dead w/in 30 seconds if you fvck it up. So this guy was an asshat and decides 'oh, im just gonna go make this deadly animal myself, what harm could happen'

and its not like everyone who eats it dies, 2 ppl this year. OMG HOLY CRAP ITS THE END OF HUMANS AS WE KNOW IT, chill the fvck out. more ppl died from sharks this year, more people probably died from eating pretzels and choking to death.

it's a delicacy, if you wanna eat it, go ahead. if you wanna be a a little pussy, then just whine and go home to your mother and don't. but for all these people who say that if you eat it you're dumb and deserve to die, its the same thing as saying 'omg, you walk across the street, you deserve to get hit by a car.'

if you ever find your fugu not to your liking, perhaps its important to not be a jackass about it when you ask the kitchen to take it back.

I've never had the opportunity to try it, but I hear it's very mild tasting. Not even guaranteed to make your mouth numb either. I think I'll have some high quality tuna sashimi instead.
