So I leave for Italy on firday and was wondering if anyone has any pointers for traveling outside the country. I already have one of those money holders you wear under your shirt. Im just curious about things to watch out for while in Italy and tips for getting through security with as little hassle as possable.

Thanks

Carry a change of clothes and your bathroom kit in your carryon. (note - shampoo, etc may now be an issue with security)

Be VERY polite if you speak in English and do not expect them to know what the hell you are saying.

Take very little money with you and use ATMs

Leave the lighter and pen knife at home.

thats exactly what I dont want to do. I have a huge respect for other cultures (one of the reasons I am going is to learn more about them. I LOVE roman history). I just hope im not labled as the "typical" american douchebag.

don't be the sterotypical obnoxious american tourist!!!

Pack your bag, then take out half since you wont use it! I have gone on three week trips with everything I need on a carryon!

that italy thread is amazing. Thanks a ton for finding that for me.

If you can, drink nothing but water the day or so before leaving and while on the flight, you will feel much better when arriving in your location. I usually break my rule by having a couple of beers and then end up feeling like crap the next day since I can't sleep on planes. What I have done a couple of times after flying overnight is check in to my hotel and then take a few hour nap and then go hit the town at night and then come back to the hotel around 1am or 2am and go directly to bed. It helps me get adjusted to their sleeping schedule.

Drink plenty of water on the flight - cabin air is pretty dry and will dehydrate you pretty quick. If you plan on sleeping on the plane get one of those neck pillows. They look silly but it really helps IMHO. Always keep your passport on you, at least until you get there. Make a couple photocopies and put them in your luggage.

If you plan to sleep pick up a neck pillow, leave your pen knife, nail clippers & shampoo at home if you're taking only a carry-on. If you can speak a language that's not english like spanish, use that. I usually get a can of cranapple juice and just sip at it since cabin air is dry. Depending on what you're doing you could probably just travel with a carry-on & laptop. Carry-on only makes life easier no hassle fighting people for luggage.
