I can't find a forum to ask this, hopefully this is the right one (since it's LCD) and some of you will be able to answer.

I've wasted enough time in useless infuriating searches and ripped enough of my hair out, so I have to turn to others to see what you recommend for digital picture frames. (For my Mother).

I can't seem to find any that don't have some negative reviews. When I may find one that's all good reviews, it's lacking features!

This one was PERFECT, (except for being 16:9). It played both images and video, and could be battery powered. I got it, and it sucked. It was the most horrible display I have ever seen with pixels the size of confetti. :( It also didn't work half the time. So I had to send it back.

Apparently what I'm asking for is too much.

  • About ~10" in size
  • 4:3 format (because that's what cameras take! 16:9 is ok, IF it can be permanently set to 4:3)
  • At least 800 x 600 resolution, preferably 1024x768
  • Can play videos (.avi and others)
  • Can run off batteries, or rechargeable battery so she can take it with her.*
  • Must be able to display 5MP images without any resizing or cropping (in other words, simply put in the flash card and it will display the ENTIRE images).
  • Be able to play SD, CF and xD cards (most won't play CF or xD. It must be able to use SD at the minimum).
  • Remote (least important, but nice to have)

And of course, the images have to look good--sharp, detailed and not blocky and pixelated.

Someone please tell me such a thing exists.

*Since these run off of 9-12v DC, what's the feasibility of running them off a battery pack made up of AAA or AA batteries, or even a 9v battery? Would that work?

I really appreciate any info.

How about the Viewsonic VFM1035-52?

Don't order from Viewsonic though, they've got some insane store thing where not only do you supply shipping and credit card info as you do at all eTailors, but, they then e-mail you asking to fax in your drivers licence and something else I can't remember. My brother JUST went through this with them...apperantly, that's their (very F'd up) way of doing things.

We cancelled with them, and ordered from someone else (RitzCamera.com or something like that).

Not sure if it meets all your qualifications, but it should be a decent frame. (didn't want to spend a ton...in a year or two, OLED frames should be more plentiful than the 1 $1000 Kodak frame that's out, and will be lots better than the LCD ones out now).

Thanks Chuck, that's happens to be one on my list and at the top. I saw it yesterday at the Viewsonic website, but I can't find anyone that's selling it for less than ~$160 ($158 at Ritz). NewEgg had it for only $99 but naturally they're out. It also doesn't run off batteries, right? I can't find out anything about its power, it's not even at the Viewsonic website. What's its voltage input? I found it in the manual, only 5v and a whopping 2A. I also see it doesn't work with CF cards. (What's the deal with CF?? No one seems to be supporting those cards anymore!)

Yeah, you're right, no internal battery in that one... :(

Sony looked like it might have had a decent one, but I abhor buying Sony anything (rewarding them for their terrible business practices isn't something I like doing), but maybe one of their models would fit what you're looking for?

Just seems like the digital picture frame market is a lot like the tablet PC market: You can find many features you'd like in many frames, but, not all the features you'd like even in 1 frame.

We have a power outlet right where this things going to be, so, no battery wasn't a big deal for us. If that's a deal breaker, along with the lack of CF card support (I think people just want the smaller format, that's why it's winning out), then this one isn't for you.

This looks nice, especially since I'm looking for a portable TV. A portable, battery powered TV that's also a digital picture frame that also plays videos (according to an Amazon review). But only 7".

In case anyone is interested, here's the webpage.
